Sharjah Fountain brings ancient Islamic art to life

The Sharjah Fountain at Al Majaz Waterfront brought the ancient Islamic art of Ebru to life with a never seen before art performance by acclaimed Ebru artist Garip Ay from Istanbul. An art form dating back to the 10th century, Ebru can perhaps be best described as painting on water. Also known as Water Marbling, this unique method of painting happens in a tray of water (the canvas) where special inks are "swirled and crafted" to produce fascinating works, which are then, traditionally, transferred to paper. The results of this process are unique with no two designs ever exactly the same again.

Merging Ebru with the oversized water screens of the spectacular Sharjah Fountain, the show takes this timeless art form beyond the realms of paper to an entirely new level. The step-by-step creation of these art pieces are presented on the Fountain’s water screens revealing art made from water and shown on water, making this a show unlike any other.

During the ten minutes of the show, which has been choreographed to an original musical score, the audience will see each unique piece of art take shape on the Fountain’s water screens. Each water painting’ will take the artist a minute to complete after which it will stay visible for another twenty seconds before a stunning display by the Fountain will wipe the screens clean making way for the next work of art.

Speaking about the show Mohammed Al Mazroui, Al Majaz Waterfront Manager, said, "We are constantly searching for innovative ways to introduce new cultures from across the globe to the people of Sharjah and the United Arab Emirates through a multitude of mediums and as such are thrilled to be able to present this breath-taking show through the magnificent Sharjah Fountain. The success that Al Majaz Waterfront has had, to date, in attracting world-class performers and artists is clear evidence of the venue and Sharjah’s standing in the international community and we look forward to continue bringing the best from around the world and the region to offer to our valued visitors." The Sharjah fountain also provides a number of screenings for other shows including the main show (Sharjah ... past, present and future) in both Arabic and English languages, the cinematic screening of "FREEJ", the poetry show titled "Sharjah" by Mohammed Al Beriki, and "Sharjah Beats" show as well as special shows for occasions.

The Dhs120m Al Majaz Waterfront, Shurooq’s debut project, was opened in December 2011 and is situated in Sharjah’s most vital and commercial district on the picturesque Khalid Lagoon. As one of the premier tourist and leisure destinations in Sharjah, it plays host to all major events in the emirate.
