The Flag Island, Sharjah’s iconic tourist destination, has entered the Guinness World Records after raising the world’s largest flag. The successful attempt formed part of the spectacular national festivities the island organised on Thursday and Friday as part of the nationwide Flag Day celebrations. Measuring 70 metres in length and 35 metres in width, the flag broke the Guinness World Record for the largest flag hoisted on a fixed flagpole. The Flag Island had awarded Trident Flagpoles, a leading company specialised in designing and making banners and flags, to manufacture the huge red, green, black and white standard for the attempt. The day also featured the largest gathering of flag raising in the U.A.E., which was organized in cooperation with The Higher Committee of National Day Celebrations in Sharjah. Kholood Al Junaibi, Manager of The Flag Island, pointed out that the new achievement adds to the portfolio of milestones made by The Flag Island, stressing the island's commitment to always achieving an impressive presence that reflects the stature of the UAE and Sharjah regionally and globally. “Since its inception, The Flag Island has proudly been a venue that has the UAE flag as its central showpiece, with its aim being to inculcate the values of patriotism and loyalty to our much-loved country,” said Al Junaibi. “Inspired by Flag Day, a patriotic occasion that commemorates the accession of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan as the President of the UAE, we were delighted to be successful in raising the world’s largest flag. This marvellous achievement added an extra dimension to the significance of the day and captured the world’s attention to the unity of the UAE, their allegiance to their wise leadership and their pride in their flag,” he added. The Flag Island was the venue for the largest congregation of people in the UAE for the raising of the country’s flag on the Flag Day. The destination celebrated the patriotic occasion that commemorates the accession of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan as President of the UAE with a rich programme of folklore shows and cultural activities designed to exemplify the spirit of union and loyalty to the nation and its wise leadership. The celebrations taking place at The Flag Island featured traditional music shows inspired by Emirati heritage and drumming performances in the Emirati-Japanese ‘Kharsha’ style. The island also hosted marine activities, a roller-skating and skateboarding parade, painting workshops and a ‘Kalinka’ International Festival Contest, which comprised traditional Russian dance performances. |
