Environment And Protected Areas Authority In Sharjah Organised "Exploring Sir Bu Nuair Program"

The Sharjah Environment and Protected Areas Authority together with the Marine Sustainability Department, organised of "Exploring Sir Bu Nuair", an educational program to promote environmental stewardship and sustainability targeting the students of the Sharjah Education Council. The program is slated to run from 29 to 31 March, 2018. Her Excellency Hana Saif Al Suwaidi, Chairperson of the Environment and Protected Areas Authority in Sharjah said, "We are excited to host several events on Sir Bu Nuair Island to highlight its beauty and environmental significance, to promote tourism and the many entertainment options available to community residents of all ages, and tourists near and far. We also want all members of our community to come and learn first-hand about our ecological preservation efforts on the island and the reserve." Al Suwaidi added, "Exploring Sir Bu Nuair has several distinct goals; 1) to develop a culture for environmental sustainability among the next generation; 2) to create a broader awareness and appreciation of the Island and the harmful impact disposable waste poses to human health and marine life; 3) to disseminate relevant information about the island’s ongoing environmental challenges; and 4) to offer meaningful programs to school-aged students during public holidays." In 2000, the Island was declared a nature reserve pursuant to Amiri Decree No. (25) issued by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah. The island enjoys international recognition as a nature reserve as its name is listed in the International Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar) in order to preserve its biodiversity-rich ecological components. It is also listed in the initial UNESCO World Heritage List, and it is accepted by a memorandum of understanding on the protection and management of sea turtles and their habitats in the Indian Ocean and Southeast Asia. |
