American University of Sharjah (AUS) has launched four interdisciplinary, PhD-granting research institutes in response to the region’s needs and in keeping with the university’s mandate to become a leading research based university in the next five years, said His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member, Ruler of Sharjah, and President of AUS, at the university's Spring 2018 commencement ceremony held May 31, at University City Hall, Sharjah. The ceremony was attended Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah; Shaikh Abdullah Bin Salim Bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah.

A total of 610 students graduated in various majors offered by the university at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
During his address, His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah, congratulated the graduates on their special day. His Highness also spoke about the next phase of AUS’s development as it establishes itself as a research university:

“I am delighted to inform you that the development of education and research at American University of Sharjah is progressing at a steady pace. After succeeding in developing a comprehensive and advanced university curriculum, AUS has now started to implement stages to transform itself into a comprehensive research university while preserving the high academic standards of its various programs.”

Elaborating on this, His Highness spoke of the new research institutes at established at the university:

“In response to the needs and aspirations of the country and the region, we have created four interdisciplinary, PhD-granting research institutes. These are the Biosciences and Bioengineering Research Institute (BBRI), Gulf Environments Research Institute (GERI), Smart Cities Research Institute (SCRI) and Materials Science and Engineering Research Institute (MSERI). To support research within the four institutes and across campus and to ensure the research conducted is regionally relevant and contributes towards finding innovative solutions to serve society and develop and augment a knowledge-based economy, we have created two advanced research centers. These are: High-Performance Computing Center (HPCC) and the Geospatial Analysis Center (GAC).”

Concluding his speech, Sheikh Dr. Sultan urged the new alumni to remain connected to their alma mater. He said:
“As for you dear graduates, I call upon you to maintain contact with your alma mater and to interact with AUS in its efforts to become a research university and to support it so that it achieves its objectives.”

In his opening remarks, AUS Chancellor Dr. Björn Kjerfve conveyed his congratulations to the students on their achievement. Dr. Kjerfve also spoke about the university’s focus on research and innovation:

“We are taking an established, 20-year-old liberal arts-based university, focused on teaching and learning, and consolidating its fine reputation and influence, by also developing a strong research branch, which we hope will have a positive impact on people’s lives, regionally and around the world. We have established four inter-disciplinary research institutes that will each offer a PhD program. In addition, we have set up 2 research support centers, where high-performance computing and analysis will be scaled to support the institutes and research on campus.”

The chancellor also mentioned the university’s plan to address critical global issues in health sciences, new materials, smart cities, and the effects of climate change on the environment. Speaking about the university’s graduate programs and the resources AUS plans to put in place to achieve its vision of becoming a premier research university, he said:

“Once the PhD programs are underway, we plan to recruit some 700 doctoral research assistants. We will hire more than 100 research-focused faculty to lead the research effort and to teach science, technology, engineering and math – the STEM subjects critical to the progress of society. We will invite researchers and post-doctoral students too, who will help us build and establish AUS – your alma mater – as a world-class research university.”

During the ceremony, His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah also conferred the honorary title of Professor Emeritus for Dr. Ali Sayfy and Professor Emerita for Dr. Fatima Badry.

Dr. Ali Sayfy joined AUS in 1997 and remained with AUS for 20 years until his retirement in 2017. He made numerous contributions to the institution in his roles as a faculty member and an administrator. Dr. Sayfy served as coordinator for the Department of Mathematics and Statistics in the College of Arts and Sciences from 2001 to 2002 and served as chair from 2002 to 2004.

Dr. Fatima Badry joined AUS in 1998 and remained with AUS for 19 years until her retirement in 2017. She made numerous contributions to the institution in her roles as a faculty member, an administrator and a member of the AUS Faculty Senate. Dr. Badry served as both Head of the Department of English and Director of the Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages program.

The ceremony was attended by Sheikh Saud Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Central Finance Department; Sheikh Khalid Bin Abdullah Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Seaport and Customs Department; Sheikh Khalid Bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Protection and Safety Authority; Sheikh Khalid Bin Isam Al Qasimi, Chairman of Civil Aviation Department; Sheikh Salem Bin Abdul Rahman Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Ruler’s Office; Sheikh Dr. Faisal Bin Khalid Al Qasimi; Sheikh Saif Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Director of the University City; Sheikh Mohammed Bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Director of Labor Standard Development Authority; as well as a number of Sheikhs.

Present at the Ceremony were also Mohammad Al Qarqawi, Minister of Cabinet Affairs and the Future; Dr. Ahmed Balhoul Al Falasi, Minister of State for Higher Education Affairs; General Saif Mohammed Al Ziri, General Commander of Sharjah Police; Tariq Sultan Bin Khadim; Chairman of the Human Resources Department; Abdullah Mohammed Al Owais, Chairman of the Cultural Department; Dr. Saeed Musabbah Al Kaabi, Chairman of Sharjah Education Council; Mohammed Obaid Al Zaabi, Chairman of the Protocol Department; Salem Yousef Al Qaseer, Chairman of the Labor Standard Development Authority; members of the AUS Board of Trustees, faculty and staff.
