The University of Sharjah, UoS, and the International Atomic Energy Agency, IAEA, have signed a cooperation agreement to promote coordination in the field of atomic energy, in Vienna. Commissioned by Prof. Hamid M.K. Al Naimiy, Chancellor of the UoS, and Prof. Maamar Bettayebthe, Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Studies at UoS, signed the agreement with the IAEA. Representing the university during the agreement signing with Dr. Dohee Hahn, Director of IAEA Division of Nuclear Power, was Dr. Walid A. Metwally, Associate Professor at the Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering. The agreement aims to build a foundation for cooperation between the university and the agency, which is one of the most influential and significant international entities in the field of atomic energy. It also reflects the UAE’s increasing interest in safe use of nuclear energy as it is interconnected with the medical, industrial, agricultural and environmental fields. Earlier this year, the Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering at the university hosted a workshop on simulating nuclear generators organised by the IAEA. Attending the workshop were 20 specialists in the nuclear fields from the UAE, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Eastern Asia countries. Following the workshops success, the university and the IAEA started discussing a cooperation agreement.
