The Echo of the Words 2 is a new exhibition taking place at the Gallery of Light at DUCTAC, Mall of the Emirates featuring projected animated images and sound by Slovenian artist Martin Avsenik derived from the work of eminent Egyptian artist and calligrapher Khalifa El Shimy. The show, which runs from 10th October – 10th November 2012, will see calligraphic letters transformed into abstract shapes and colours. The show will feature artworks in a range of media including modernist acrylic paintings by El Shimy and animated sound pictures by Avsenik with motifs derived from traditional calligraphy representing elements of El Shimy’s paintings.

The Echo of the Words 2 is a collaboration between artist and calligrapher Khalifa El Shimy, who is a resident of Sharjah, and the Slovenian based ARS Studio Avsenik, run by academic painter Martin Avsenik. The company is oriented at creative projects that combine picture, sound and space into an applicable audiovisual whole by means of today’s information technology. The Echo of the Words 2 will be Ars Studio Avsenik’s second artistic exhibit in Dubai, after 2010’s Illuminated Sound Pictures, also at DUCTAC’s Gallery of Light.

The exhibition’s organisers will also offer the public an opportunity to enter into an active dialogue with the artists through a hands-on Arabic Calligraphy workshop and an e-learning programme called e-Calligraphy. This programme is devised to compliment the exhibition, to open up new ways of viewing and appreciating the art on display and to make the art of calligraphy accessible to all.

Ars Studio Avsenik will be hosting an opening reception on Wednesday 10th October at 7pm which is open to the public.
