The Sharjah Calligraphy Museum has launched a training course titled ‘Improve Your Handwriting’, in order to develop the writing skills of trainees and further promote the art of Arabic calligraphy.

Running from 15 October to 15 December 2012, the course will be held on the Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday of each week. Organizing the course comes in line with the eagerness of the Sharjah Museums Department (SMD) to promote Arabic calligraphy and teach people different styles of writing and Arabic scripts.

The two-month course is held in response to several calls for reducing dependence on writing–related modern technology and for improving the writing skills of students and those interested in Arabic calligraphy under the supervision of qualified teachers.

Arabic calligraphy is an important component and significant part of Arab-Islamic civilization, and all its related events are supported intensely by the UAE.

Arabic calligraphy has always played a central role in the history of the Arab nation. It is an art form that was given vital importance by its founding pioneers who created different types and forms of Arabic calligraphy throughout various ages. Those calligraphers have been recognized for their creative calligraphic works that are now on display at Sharjah’s museums, which hosts an impressive collection of samples of Arabic calligraphy.

Holding the course “Improve Your Handwriting” comes out of our keen interest in supporting and encouraging the development of Arabic calligraphy, as well as the desire to honour and preserve it as cultural heritage to be passed on from one generation to the next.

As we believe that success builds upon itself, we expect this training course to be successful. We also expect that it will receive an exceptional response from lovers of Arabic calligraphy.

SMD would spare no effort to host similar events, which reflect Sharjah’s major role in hosting and sponsoring all artistic and humanitarian manifestations of Arab-Islamic civilization.

The course is aimed at teaching the trainees how to hold a pen correctly, improve hand writing, and teach them different styles of writing, such as Ruqa’h and Naskh scripts in the first phase, while other writing styles will be taught in the upcoming courses, which will be held regularly.

Workshops on teaching methods of cane sharpening, ink and paper making will be held on the side lines of the course
