Sharjah Aviation Services Launches Go Green Initiatives In Partnership With Air Arabia And Sharjah Airport
(21 January 2013)

Sharjah Aviation Services (SAS), one of the leading airport ground handling company in the UAE, announced today that it has launched a ‘Go Green’ initiative in order to offset carbon emissions at Sharjah International Airport. The programme, which reflects the company’s commitment to eco-friendly operations, is launched in partnership with Air Arabia and Sharjah International Airport.

As part of the ‘Go Green’ initiative, Sharjah Aviation Services implements ambitious environmentally friendly initiatives in an effort to generate cleaner air, lower emissions and increased energy efficiency, influencing all aspects of the airport’s ground handling operations. This is being achieved through improved energy conservation measures and increased use of renewable energy sources, such as solar energy and electric power.

Recommendations include expanding the use of advanced technology ground support vehicles by replacing Sharjah Aviation Services fleet of 200 diesel and petrol-powered vehicles by 2020. In the next five years, the company is expected to invest at least AED10 million in purchasing 20 nine-tone electric baggage tractors, 15 25-tone electric baggage tractors and 20 electric belt loaders.

“Airports across the globe are implementing numerous eco-friendly initiatives in the face of expected climate change,” said, Tony Smith, General Manager at Sharjah Aviation Services.

“More efficient ground handling services will bring greater efficiency for airlines and airports, which in turn translates to a safe and eco friendly environment. The inclusion of electric and solar vehicles in our fleet will eliminate the need to burn a significant amount of fuel annually. Through this programme, we are confident that over the next few years, Sharjah International Airport will be acclaimed as a model green airport.”
