Sharjah Ladies Club hosted a poetry session titled “Rhythm of Life” in association with Emirates Women Writers Association, and with the presence of H.E. Sheikha Jameela bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Vice President of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs and Director General of Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services. Along with Salha Ghabish, Head of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs (SCFA) Media and Cultural Committee, and Khawla Al Serkal, Director of Sharjah Ladies Club and a number of dignitaries.
The session was conducted by Natasha Trethewey, U.S. Poet Laureate for the year 2012-2013, and Emirati Poet Bushra Abdulla, winner of the “Fifteenth Session of Sharjah Award for Excellence in Education”, and Emirati Poet Shaikha Al Mutairi, Member of the Cultural Committee of the Union of the Emirates Writers and Member of the Editorial board of the (qaf) journal issues by the writers Union UAE.
Guests were welcomed in the session and were introduced to the importance of poetry and its great role in introducing and spreading peace all around the world. The evening started off with a poetry session from the poets along with a classical piano performance by Layla Abu Zikry, where each poet performed three poems addressing different themes, such as, Confused Words, I wrote but in vain, and Knight, who made knights tired by Bushra Abdulla. Still longing, The Café, and Venice performed by Shaikha Al Mutairi. Moreover, Myth, Illumination, and Elegy poems performed by Natasha Trethewey.
"We are honored and pleased to host this poetry session "Rhythm of Life" at the Club in association with the Emirates Women Writers Association, as we are very glad to have Natasha Trethewey, U.S. Poet present this evening and Emirati poets Shaikha Al Mutairi and Bushra Abdulla, especially since the club is always keen on hosting various cultural events with a worldwide range, and that is of course under Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi’s guidance in establishing cultural understanding and developing literature and poetry. The presence of an American Poet along with Emiratis assures our constant communication where we strive to build bridges of peace with various countries of the world to be introduced to different cultures and introduce our culture in return. We are glad of the event’s turnout and we hope to associate more with other cultural entities to host such events in the future as well", said Khawla Al Serkal, Director of SLC.
In conclusion, poets were awarded by HE Sheikha Jameela bint Mohammed Al Qasimi along with pianist Layla Abu Zikry, followed by a dinner reception for attending guest.
