Sharjah Baby Friendly Emirate Campaign Visits Norway To Exchange Views On Breastfeeding

A delegation of the Ministry of Health and Sharjah Baby Friendly Emirate Campaign, chaired by Dr Hajer Al Hosani, Director of Maternal and Child Health, Ministry of Health visited Norway, to keep peace with the highest global practices about breastfeeding. The delegation was welcomed by Dr Peter Ogar; Director General; Norwegian Ministry of Health and care services and Dr Anne Baerug; director of the Breastfeeding Resources Center.

The Baby Friendly Hospitals Initiative was one of the most important initiatives and projects that were showcased during the meeting, where many hospitals have participated in this initiative which was launched in the early nineties of the last century in Norway. In addition to National Breastfeeding Coordination Center based at Oslo University, the agenda of the meeting included a diverse range of topics, elements and programmes in the term of enhancing awareness on the benefits of the breastfeeding for both mother and child.

The meeting also focused on the Norwegian rules and regulations that support breastfeeding, especially at the workplace to offer health and care for children. It also shed light on maternity leave, workshops and awareness campaigns.

Elaborating on this visit, Dr Hessa Khalfan Al Ghazal, Director of the Executive Committee for the Sharjah Baby Friendly Emirate Campaign says: “The Campaign is keen to enhance cooperation with international organisations as a step towards global practices in breastfeeding. Our visit to Norway resulted in a number of outputs and recommendations that will push breastfeeding awareness forward.”

In this respect, she praised the high level of breastfeeding practices in Norway, commending the significant efforts from the Norwegian government. She also affirmed to cement the future cooperation.

Dr. Al Ghazal further elaborated saying: “The emirate of Sharjah has experienced significant developments in all fields, especially in the area of breastfeeding. The leadership of the emirate is renowned for enthusiasm in supporting the health of a child from birth. The projects and initiatives launched by the Sharjah Baby Friendly Emirate Campaign have played a vital role in promoting the values of breastfeeding, and maintaining the health of mother and child.”
