Sharjah Museums Department UAE’s Rich Heritage And Cultural Legacy
(20 May 2013)

All-round praise for performances of ’Golden Age’ and ’Our Heritage between Past and Present’

As part of their most extensive International Museums Day celebrations to date, the entire staff of Sharjah Museums Department (SMD) joined forces to deliver an unprecedented variety of educational workshops and events, aimed at highlighting UAE heritage and its ongoing relevance and beauty in our lives today.

A packed, fun-filled 3-day programme developed and delivered by SMD’s museums offered visitors the opportunity to participate in folkloristic events as well as heritage, scientific, art and cultural workshops at the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization.

As innovative highlights of the programme, SMD staff authored and presented two theatrical plays, performed by children for children and their families.

The first, entitled ’Our Heritage between Past and Present’ highlighted the need for younger and older generations to explore UAE heritage together and preserve its legacy in the face of challenges presented by modern technology and increasing globalisation. The second play, entitled ‘The Golden Age’ was designed to raise awareness of some of the greatest Islamic scientists in history and the debt our contemporary lives owe to their achievements.

The scientists featured included the Moroccan geographer Al Idrisi, the famous navigator Ibn Majid from Ras al-Khaimah, Al Zahrawi, the groundbreaking surgeon from Al-Andalus, and Ibn Al Haytham, to whom we owe many principles and procedures still crucial in modern ophthalmology.

Both plays were enthusiastically received by visitors to the IMD events, in particular as they were both authored and presented by Emiratis, a fact that clearly emphasises SMD’s commitment to putting its local audiences in touch with their heritage and their museums in innovative and inspiring ways.
