As part of its ongoing efforts to enrich the community’s knowledge, Sharjah Museums Department (SMD) is continuing its popular Family Amusement Day and Adult programme throughout June 2013. Eight free educational, social and cultural workshops have been announced offering participants the chance to find out how vintage cars work, what jellyfish eat, how to create a piece of pottery and much more.

Organised by the SMD’s Department of Education and Interpretation , the workshops will take place from 1-29 June at the Sharjah Archaeology Museum, Sharjah Classic Cars Museum, Sharjah Heritage Museum, Sharjah Art Museum, Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization and Sharjah Aquarium. Covering Islamic art, traditional crafts, archaeology, heritage, marine life and vintage cars, the workshops are a unique opportunity to learn more about Sharjah Museums’ extensive collections through gallery talks, discussions and hand-on activities.

The programme includes two parts family amusement and adult programmes, with both types of workshops designed to showcase Sharjah’s diverse history in an interactive and appealing manner. Participants of all ages are invited to come along to learn something new during one of the UAE’s hottest months. On Saturday 1 June (10am), families can enjoy a memorable day at Sharjah Archaeology Museum, during which there will be discussions and fun activities illustrating the history of Sharjah, its civilization and cultural development.

For children aged 3-6 years and their caregivers, there is an event entitled I Love My Heritage, taking place at Sharjah Heritage Museum on Saturday 8 June (10am). As part of the middle of Sha’aban (Haq Al Laila) celebrations, children will be able to try on traditional jewellery, learn about our ancestors’ clothes and fabrics, and collect candy to take home.

Families interested in marine life should head to Sharjah Aquarium on Saturday 15 June (10am) to get up close and personal with jellyfish and learn more about these fascinating sea creatures. The Jellyfish World workshop will also offer the chance to create a piece of artwork in the shape of a jellyfish, meanwhile, Sharjah Art Museum is holding a family ‘Be a Guide’ workshop on Saturday 22 June (10am), during which a museum guide will reveal more details about this enjoyable cultural profession. Participants will be given the opportunity to create their own museum tour based on artworks of their choice.

For families with disabilities, the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization is holding a Decorate Your Vase workshop on Saturday 29 June (10am). Attendees will learn about the evolution of Islamic art and create a vase of their own, inspired by the museum’s collection.

June’s adult programme kicks off with a workshop for Mechanism of electricity in cars at the Sharjah Classic Cars Museum on Wednesday 5 June, Participants can enjoy being a mechanic for the day, with an exclusive tour of the museum’s collection of 100 vintage cars and the chance to inspect engine parts and learn how the vehicles work, yet or those interested in ceramic art, there’s a three-day pottery workshop, being held at the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization from 17-19 June.

Designed to teach participants about the history of the industry, it will also offer the opportunity to create and decorate a piece of pottery. Day one includes a museum tour of the most important pieces of ceramic art in various Islamic eras, followed by a discussion on design techniques. Day two comprises a pottery formation workshop and on day three attendees will learn how to use sculpting tools.

On Tuesday 25 June, families are invited to celebrate Haq Al Laila at Sharjah Heritage Museum. On this special cultural occasion, participants can enjoy designing and creating bags that will then be filled with sweets by delighted children.
