The Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF) is participating in the Seoul International Book Fair, which is taking place at COEX in Seoul from the 19th to the 23rd of June and was inaugurated by Park Geun-hye, President of South Korea.
Headed by Ahmed Al Ameri, SIBF Director, and including Salim Omar Salim, Head of Sales & Marketing at SIBF, the SIBF delegation is making use of the opportunity to promote SIBF in the international arena and to invite publishers from the region to take part in the upcoming 32nd Sharjah International Book Fair which will be taking place from the 6th to the 16th of November 2013 at the Expo Centre Sharjah.
Speaking about their participation, Ahmed Al Ameri said, “SIBF is always eager to take part in premier international book events, such as the Seoul International Book Fair, in line with the vision and directives of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, as they provide an excellent platform on which to promote the diverse and wide ranging offerings of the Sharjah International Book Fair. We are especially pleased to be participating in Seoul and we are looking forward to forging many new mutually beneficial relationships with various stakeholders in the region’s book industry.”
The SIBF Director went on to add that one of the major focus points of their participation was to promote the SIBF Professional Programme, which is being organised in conjunction with the Fair and will take place in the three days running up to the Fair. “The Professional Programme is one of the highlights of the Sharjah International Book Fair and as we now prepare for the third instalment of this highly successful event, we are looking to attract an even broader base of participants. With its diverse schedule of discussion sessions, lectures, workshops, and symposiums, among other activities related to the publishing and book industry, the Professional Programme offers a unique opportunity to professionals in the publishing sector to network and share expertise and experiences, and opportunity that we are working to enrich further by ensuring the most divers possible range of participants.”
The SIBF stand received a number of senior officials and diplomats, including Mr Abdullah Al Marzouqi Second Secretary at UAE Embassy in South Korea and Mr Abdullah Al Shamsi, in which they praised the efforts of Sharjah International Book Fair in supporting and promoting the Emirati culture and enriching the national culture product through SIBF editions- the much– awaited cultural extravaganza by intellectuals from around the world, in addition to supporting the book and publishing industry and enriching the expertise of professionals in this vital sector through various programmes.
SIBF’s exhibit, which has already attracted widespread attention and praise from visitors and participants to the Seoul Book Fair, is displaying and promoting a range of Sharjah based publications including publications by HH Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, the ‘Culture Without Borders’ project, and various titles from the award winning Sharjah-based Arabic children’s publisher, Kalimat.
The Seoul International Book Fair is held annually by the Korea Publishers Association in order to promote Korean publications abroad, strengthen the competitiveness of the publishing industry, promote reading among the public, and allow the public to enjoy diverse cultures through literature. The 2013 edition has welcomed India as its guest of honour with a wide range of events, activities, seminars, and exhibitions celebrating India’s contributions to world literature. The Fair’s Culture Focus for this year is on Canada, in celebration of 50 years of diplomatic ties between Korea and Canada.
The annual Sharjah International Book Fair was established in 1982 and is one of the four largest international book fairs in the world. It is open to the public and professionals and its 2012 edition saw the attendance of more than 942 exhibitors and 600,000 visitors. The 2012 SIBF Professional Programme saw participation by 180 international and 70 Arab publishing professionals who made use of the opportunity to network, exchange ideas and experience, and benefit from the expertise of elite group of professionals and specialists.
