Sharjah Children’s Centres Partners With Sharjah Museums To Organise Sharjah International Biennial For Children’s Arts 2014
(29 August 2013)

As part of Sharjah Children’s Centres preparations for organizing the 4th edition of the Sharjah International Biennial for Children’s Arts, scheduled to be held in 2014 in collaboration with Sharjah Museums Department (SMD), Sharjah children’s Centres (SCC) and SMD have recently signed a memorandum of understanding in which the two parties have agreed to consult and collaborate on the strategic, curatorial, artistic, educational and practical aspects of this popular programme.

The Sharjah International Biennial for Children’s Arts – an initiative of HH Sheikha Jawaher Bint Mohammed Al-Qasimi, wife of His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, Chairperson of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs - gives youngsters the opportunity to communicate their dreams, hopes and expectations through art.

Based on the premise that ‘art is a mirror of mankind in our contemporary world’, the biennial promotes self-discovery for children aged 6-12 and is intended to generate understanding between different cultures. It also strives to teach children to open their eyes to art and to develop an appreciation of the artistic expressions of others.

The last children’s art biennial, held from 25 Nov. 2012 – 25 Jan. 2013, showcased 3,197 works by young artists from 61 countries. In its third edition, the biennial was organised around the theme ‘Restart’ and aimed to highlight multi-cultural creativity in the 21st-century child.

Reem Bin Karam, acting Director of Sharjah Children’s Centres, said: "The Sharjah International Biennial for Children’s Arts forms an umbrella that brings together the young talents from all over the world. We aim through this event to open up new channels to showcase children’s creative work and also help children from different parts of the world communicate with each other, as well as to share experiences."

"We believe in the importance of community partnerships in all fields that help promote children’s creativity, and therefore we have signed this agreement with Sharjah Museums Department, out of our keen interest in expanding avenues of communication, cooperation and partnership with all local, Arab and international institutions dedicated to children’s issues," she added.

“We are delighted to announce this new partnership with Sharjah Children’s Centres to collaborate on the future strategic development and delivery of the biennial,” says Manal Ataya, Director General of SMD. “The exhibition gives children the platform to use art as a language by which to communicate their thoughts and emotions. It is vital that children today are encouraged to be creative and make positive long lasting connections with other children. Our aim is that the next biennial will build from strength to strength and continue to be successful."
