Chinese Publishers Welcome Invitation To Participate In Sharjah International Book Fair

A delegation from the Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF) has concluded a series of meetings and visits in China during its participation in the 19th edition of the Beijing International Book Fair, which was held at the Beijing International Convention Centre from 28 August- 1 September 2013.

More than 2000 publishing houses from 58 countries from across the world took part in one of Asia’s largest publishing industry events where the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has participated as the guest of honour.

The SIBF delegation led by Salim Omarsalim, Head of Sales and Marketing at SIBF, included Mohan Kumar, External Affairs Executiveat SIBF. A number of Chinese figures, international publishers,and academic institutions visited the SIBF stand.

Speaking on the occasion,Salim Omarsalim, Head of Sales and Marketing at SIBF, said, “Our participation comes in line with the directives of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, who has always stressed the importance of cultural exchange with globally prestigious countries, such as China, in order to introduce Islamic and Arabic culture, expand avenues of common cultural cooperation, and benefit from China’s rich cultural experience in science and arts.”

“The SIBF participation in China’s book event helped enhance the UAE’s cultural role and presence in such a big publishing industry event, and the delegation conducted a series of meetings with Chinese publishers in particular as well as other publishers from other countries. It also made use of this opportunity to invite publishers to take part in the upcoming Sharjah International Book Fair,”he added.

A large number of Chinese publishers welcomed the invitation and expressed their wish to strengthen ties of cooperation with the SIBF through their participation in its Professional Programme.

The delegation also invited the Chinese Publishers Association to participate in the 2013 Sharjah Book Fair, and praised the excellent welcome and hospitality they received during their visit, which reflects the deep-rooted cultural relations between the UAE and China.

The SIBF delegates also attended a reception hosted by the British Publishers Association, which was held on the sidelines of the Beijing Book Fair with the aim of bolstering relations between British publishers and their Chinese counterparts.

The cultural role of the Sharjah Book Fair in the region was recognised by participating publishers due to its impressive progress and development with special praise given to the SIBF Professional Programme.

Attended by approximately 300 publishers from around the globe and the Arab world, the SIBF Professional Programme features a series of discussion sessions, lectures, workshops and symposiums, among other activities related to the publishing and book industry that are held prior to the Book fair.

The programme provides a platform for authors and publishers from across the world to network and exchange ideas and experiences as well as to benefit from the expertise of an elite group of professionals and specialists. The programme also includes translation deals, which are concluded on the grounds of the translation grant estimated at $4,000 for adult books and $1500 for children’s books. The translation grant is provided by the SIBF to publishers to support the translation ofbooks from and to different languages with the aim of promoting culture worldwide.
The upcoming Sharjah International Book Fair will take place from 6-16 November 2013 at the Expo Centre Sharjah.
