Bee’ah School Of Environment Takes Environmental Education To A New Level Of Students Engagement
(24 September 2013)

Bee’ah - the Middle East’s award winning and leading integrated environmental and waste management company – and its partner, the Sharjah Education Zone (SEZ) will be bringing to Sharjah a new wave of environmental education to the Emirate, it was announced at a special event held at the Al Jawaher Reception and Convention Centre.

The Bee’ah School of Environment (BSOE), an environmental education initiative created and supported by the two entities and sponsored by various corporate partners unveiled the new look and features of its new website www.bsoe.ae, which reinforces the educational programmes and lesson plans of the initiative, while acting as a ‘self-start’ ignition for students, to involve and engage them in a variety of environmental activities and sustainable practices every day. This new and improved website will include a students’ area where they can integrate their environmental lessons with social media and use various interactive elements to express their views and their learning. It is a collaborative environment that involves both teachers and students to further engage them by exploring and increasing their knowledge on the environment.

During the event, Mr. Khaled Al Huraimel, Group CEO of Bee’ah said: “We are proud to see the success of Bee’ah’s environmental educational initiative in spreading awareness about how we can take care of our planet. Planting the seed of environmental education is vital for a sustainable future. The BSOE was developed as part of our mandate to prepare environmental education programmes for children, and ultimately the community, in order to develop an environmental way of thinking and to adopt recycling in their everyday lives.”

Mr. Muhsen Al Qarawi, representative of Sharjah Educational Zone, said “in line with the efforts to protect the environment and spread environmental awareness among community members, the BSOE encourage students and teachers of schools in Sharjah to effectively participate in environmental awareness practices. We also encourage our children to show off their talents and to evelop their creative and innovative skills in environmental awareness.”

Both students and teachers had the chance to experience the new website through designated touch screen stands, providing the opportunity for them to register online. The new website will be the gateway to connecting teachers and students with one another to increase environmental awareness.

The Bee’ah School of Environment’s achievement of environmental education has successfully reached over 164,000 students after it has been implemented in over 200 schools across the Emirate Sharjah. To further spread environmental awareness as well as encourage students to learn about waste reduction, the initiative announced the launch of a recycling competition between all the participating schools to collect paper, plastic and aluminium materials. The competition will run from the first week of November 2013 through to June 2014, and registered schools will receive dedicated recycling bins from Tandeef, Bee’ah’s waste collection division, as well as informational leaflets demonstrating to students how to separate their waste.

As a result of last year’s education and awareness programmes, the company reported a rise in residential recycling levels from 40% to over 52% in 2012, the same year the residential recycling programme was rolled out. This year’s campaign is expected to reach out to even more people, and help further increase recycling levels, to support Bee’ah’s goal to reach zero-waste to landfill for the Emirate of Sharjah by 2015.

The initiative took the opportunity of the event to launch the fourth Sharjah Education Awareness Awards (SEAA) for the academic year 2013/2014. The annual competition was created under the direction of H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, member of the Supreme Council of the UAE and Ruler of Sharjah, and aims to recognise and honour schools within Sharjah, in special accomplishments, and to increase environmental awareness within schools and promote school spirit through team work.

For the past three years since the launch of the competition, more than 80 different schools and nurseries have participated in the past to showcase their outstanding efforts towards protecting the environment. Those schools actively involved their students in a range of creative and educational projects, in all aspects of the environment including preserving natural resources, reducing waste disposal, conserving water and protecting biodiversity.

Registration for the recycling competition and the SEAA Awards are now open to all schools within Sharjah, from nursery to grade 12. Registration can be made online at www.seaa.ae. The winning schools will be announced at a special ceremony on World Environment Day, June 5th 2014.
