Bee’ah Launches City-Wide Recycling Campaign
(13 October 2013)

Awareness Campaign To Encourage Recycling Practices Across Sharjah & The UAE

Bee’ah – the Middle East’s leading and award winning integrated environmental and waste management company – has launched a month-long residential engagement campaign starting from the 20th of September. The ‘Recycle for a Greener Sharjah’campaign aims to educate the residentsof Sharjah about effective waste management, recycling and the negative effects of improper waste disposal.

“Bee’ah is providing the education initiatives and programmes to tackle local waste challenges to help our communities,” said Mr. Khaled Al Huraimel, Group CEO of Bee’ah. “The residents of Sharjah and the UAE have only begun to realise the urgent need for solid waste solutions and this campaign will encourage community members to become active participants in efforts to reduce waste through recycling.”

Bee’ah expects this campaign to have a positive impact on recycling rates by the end of the year. As a result of last year’s awareness campaign, the company reported a rise in residential recycling levels from 40% to over 52% in 2012 – the same year the residential recycling programme was introduced. This year’s campaign is expected to reach out to even more people, and will support Bee’ah’s goal to reach zero-waste to landfill for the Emirate of Sharjah by 2015.

Speaking about the awareness campaign, Mr.AbdulhamidBukashem, Senior Manager for Sharjah City Centre said: “Sharjah City Centre is pleased to support Bee’ah in helping to promote greater environmental awareness amongst Sharjah residents. The ‘Recycle for a Greener Sharjah’ campaign further supports what the mall has done in the past, such as encouraging shoppers to reuse bags for grocery shopping. We are optimistic that this campaign will educate our shoppers – young and old, about the importance of waste reduction through reusing and recycling.”

Special kiosks displaying environmental messages, as well as distributing recycling tools like informational brochures and blue and green bin liners bags, are available to support recycling. These kiosks are located at the Sharjah Cooperative Society (Halwan, Qarain, Riqqa, Al Khan, Dhaid, Fayha, Sweihat, Abushagara, Nukhilath and Hamriya locations); at Matajer (in Al Juraina and Al Mirgab), the American University of Sharjah (AUS) as well as Mega Mall and Sharjah City Centre.

In addition to the campaign, awareness programmes and education initiative, the Bee’ah School of Environment (www.bsoe.ae), which has already reached and educated 164,000 students in over 200 schools across Sharjah, will continue to educate children and young adults in the UAE about the adverse effects of improper waste disposal. The organisation will also work with other educational institutions and research centres to monitor air quality, as well as conduct surveys on waste generation data in Sharjah.

Bee’ah will also be placing over 25 additional Reverse Vending Machines (RVMs) for plastic bottles, aluminium cans and used light bulbs at the Sharjah Cooperative Society outlets and other locations to encouragerecycling in the UAE. These machines are linked tomyBee’ah Loyalty Programme awarding points to residents who use the machines in exchange for special offers and discounts from the Programme’s partners via the portal (www.mybeeah.ae)
