As a part of its commitment to encourage a love of learning among Sharjah’s community, Sharjah Museums Department is hosting eight free educational workshops during November, targeting families, adults and visitors with disabilities.
With the aim of making learning fun, the workshops have been specially designed to offer attendees a wide range of unforgettable experiences, from getting up close and personal with beautiful sea creatures to becoming an air traffic controller. Two eco-friendly workshops are included in the programme to highlight the importance of preserving our environment and reusing materials.
Taking place at Al Mahatta Museum, Sharjah Aquarium, Sharjah Archaeology Museum, Sharjah Art Museum, Sharjah Heritage Museum and Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization, the workshops are a unique opportunity to learn something new through gallery talks, discussions and practical activities.
On Saturday 2nd November, children aged 7-13 years and their parents/caregivers are invited to Al Mahatta Museum where they will experience the work of an air traffic controller for the day at ‘Your Amazing Binocular’ workshop.
Built on the site of the UAE’s first airport, Al Mahatta Museum provides a fascinating glimpse into what air travel was like in the 1930s. At the air-traffic-control-themed session, participants will be able to try out the various observing tools and create their own pair of binoculars.
Those interested in marine life should head to Sharjah Aquarium on Wednesday 6 November to go on a journey under the sea. With more than 250 species, from the smallest clown fish and delicate seahorses to moray eels, rays and reef sharks, there will be so much to see during this behind-the-scenes tour of the aquarium for participants of ages 16 and above.
Parents with children aged 3-6 years old will be delighted to be part of a workshop called “Your Beautiful Horse”, taking place on Saturday 9 November at Sharjah Archaeology Museum. The youngsters will travel back in time to learn about what horses were used for and then will decorate a model horse using accessories inspired by the museum’s collection.
On Wednesday 13 November, a gallery talk will take place at Sharjah Archaeology Museum, hosted by specialists with expert knowledge of the civilization of the UAE and Arabian Peninsula.
Two eco-friendly workshops for 7-13 years old and their parents/caregivers are scheduled for Saturday 16 November, at Sharjah Art Museum, and Saturday 23rd November, at Sharjah Aquarium. The first, “Paper Fashion”, will offer attendees the chance to design outfits made from natural materials, while the second workshop will focus on the endangered mangrove plant. Participants will learn simple ways to preserve mangroves and create their own artwork inspired by the plant.
“Henna Designs”, on Wednesday 27th November at Sharjah Heritage Museum, is a workshop for participants of 16 years and above, and aims to explore henna designs from various cultures.
Especially designed for visitors with special needs, the “Floral Printing” workshop takes place on Saturday 30th November at Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization. Following a tour of the museum to get inspired by the floral patterns on vessels dating back to the rich Islamic eras, participants will print their own eye-catching motifs using leaves and flowers.
Workshops take place at 10 am. Family programmes for children aged 3-6 and 7-13 years old with their parents/caregivers are available on a first-come first-served basis in November. The Floral Printing workshop for visitors with disabilities requires prior booking. To book, call 06 519 7258 or e-mail Accessibility@SharjahMuseums.ae.
