To mark International Astronomy Day, Sharjah Science Museum is celebrating their annual Astronomy Event – a three day programme titled, ‘Exploring Mars, Discovering Earth’.
The event was inaugurated by H.E. Yousuf Hamad Alshaibani, Director General of Emirates Institution for Advanced Science and Technology, who was accompanied by several representatives of Sharjah Science Museum and Sharjah Museums Department.
Aimed at raising awareness among adults, children and families, Astronomy Day provides visitors with a chance to see the real-life model of the Dubai Sat 1 satellite exhibited by the Emirates Institution for Advanced Science and Technology, explore the surface of Mars with the wireless Mars Rover, as well as an experience of the first mobile observatory in the region, which boasts the most advanced technology available worldwide installed by Eng. Nizar Salam.
Two lectures are being given by distinct astronomers, ’Exoplanets’ by Dr. Nidhal Guessoum, Professor at the American University in Sharjah, and ‘Changing Weather in UAE’ by Mr. Ebrahim Al Jarwan, Astronomy and Meteorology researcher and general supervisor of the Celestial Dome in Sharjah.
The Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization is introducing visitors to techniques and ideas developed by Muslim scholars centuries ago for the study of space through a workshop titled, ’Making Astrolabe’.
In an exhibition organised by Omar bin Al Khattab Model School, the visitors and astronomy enthusiasts will have the opportunity to learn how to use different types of space softwares to study the hidden secrets of space, and attend impressive planetarium shows. Educational lectures are also being delivered by Al Majd Model School.
A screening of the film ‘Mars Exploration Rover’ is organised by Dubai Astronomy Group.
In addition, the Astronomy event celebration will include several workshops suiting all ages and aimed to help learn about astronomy and celestial bodies under different and interesting themes; such as: A Rocket to the Moon, The Constellation Dome, The Stars Bag, Launching Rockets, Wall Painting, Air Car and Space Fashion Show.
