Sharjah Strengthens Cultural And Economic Ties With Bavaria

In a recent visit to Munich, Sheikha Hoor al Qasimi, President of Sharjah Art Foundation, reaffirmed Sharjah’s support for cultural and economic ties with Bavaria.

Al Qasimi ratified Sharjah’s support to guests from the Bavarian Arabian Society during a dinner hosted by the visiting delegation – which included Manal Ataya, Director General of Sharjah Museums Department; Khalid Al Midfa, Director General of Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority; and Fatma al Jasmi, Office Manager of Sharjah Art Foundation. The gathering, which was also attended by Khalid Al Mehairi, Consul General and Muna Al Qahtani, First Secretary, of UAE General Consulate - Munich, was aimed at boosting existing ties between the two parties, particularly in the areas of arts and culture.

In her welcoming speech, Sheikha Hoor highlighted the vital importance of Sharjah’s arts and culture sector and spoke about the growing success of the Sharjah Biennial. She also elaborated on the work of the foundation, which includes initiatives such as residencies, production grants, commissions and exhibitions, to enhance international partnerships.

Several senior representatives also addressed attendees, specifically remarking on the continued support of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, for initiatives relating to education, culture and tourism.

In his address, Al Midfa highlighted Sharjah’s numerous awards and international recognitions, specifically referring to its selection as UNESCO’s Arab Capital of the World 1998, as the Capital of Islamic Culture for 2014, and as the Capital of Arab Tourism for 2015, while Ataya took the opportunity to provide an overview of the emirate’s 18 museums, and highlighted new projects being planned for 2014 and beyond.

As part of their visit, and in the spirit of intercultural dialogue and friendship, the delegation were given an extensive tour of Munich’s most important attractions, including the Pinakothek Museum of Art, the Egyptian Museum, the Kunst Museum, Brandhorst Museum, and BMW Welt where the delegation also met with the Mr Graeme Grieve, Regional Vice President Imports Africa, Asia, Pacific and Middle East.
