Sharjah Museums Department Raises Awareness For A Sustainable Future

In an effort to raise awareness on the importance of ecosystem preservation, Sharjah Maritime Museum, Sharjah Aquarium and Bait Sheikh Saeed Bin Hamad Al Qasimi organized the Kalba Port Cleanup Campaign which aimed to encourage the community to better care for marine environment and limit sea pollution.

The event was held at Bait Sheikh Saeed, Kalba this year and was opened by Sheikh Haitham bin Saqr bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Chief of the Sharjah Ruler’s Office in Kalba, in the presence of HE Hilal Mohammed Abdullah Al Naqbi, Chairman of Kalba Municipal Council, Mr. Ahmed Jumaa Al Hora, General Manager of Kalba Municipality, Mr. Obaid Saeed Al Kindi, Director of Kalba Hospital, Ms. Aisha Deemas, Director of Executive Affairs, Sharjah Museums Department and representatives of the participating entities.

The event forms part of Sharjah Museums Department’s social responsibility initiative ‘Because We Care’ which was initiated in 2009 and has taken place in various locations across Sharjah since its launch 5 years ago.
This year, Kalba Port was selected as the venue, and volunteers helped clean the coastal area while participating divers cleaned up the seabed. Around 5 tons and 150 kilograms of waste materials were extracted from the seabed which was delivered to Bee’ah for processing and recycling in the company’s waste management facility in Al Saja’a.

A large number of school children also participated in the campaign, and had the opportunity to enjoy various hands-on activities that included arts and crafts using recycled materials, along with educational workshops that encouraged participants to observe and engage with their surrounding natural environments.
Furthermore, a panel discussion took place where Dr. Ebraheem Abdulla Al Jamali, Director of Marine Environment Research at Ministry of Environment, and Water and Mr. Abdullah Bu Ali, Head of the Department of Environmental Protection - Sharjah Municipality, presented on the direct effects of human activity on the environment, and particularly marine life.

Eminent organizations and individuals supported and took part in the event including; the Ministry of Environment and Water, Kalba Police, Sharjah Educational Zone, Kalba Municipality, Kalba Fishermen Association, Kalba Civil Defence Department, Kalba Hospital, Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority – Kalba, Environment And Protected Areas Authority – Sharjah, Dibba Al Hisn Fishermen Association and Bee’ah.
