Sharjah Museums Department To Host International Symposium "Islamic Civilization In The 21st Century: Global Perspectives" In Partnership With American University Of Sharjah
(22 September 2014)

Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qassimi, UAE Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, the Sharjah Museums Department (SMD) is delighted to announce an exciting and innovative, international symposium entitled “Islamic Civilization in the 21st Century: Global Perspectives”, hosted in partnership with and at American University of Sharjah (AUS) from 24-25th of September 2014.

The symposium, which is free and open to students and the general public alike, will bring together inspiring and outstanding young thought leaders from the educational, cultural, scientific and artistic sectors, recognized within the Islamic world and indeed internationally. The event is being organized by the two partners as a contribution to Sharjah’s celebrations as2014 Capital of Islamic Culture.

Remarking upon “Islamic Civilization in The 21st Century: Global Perspectives”, SMD Director General Manal Ataya said, “It is a great pleasure for SMD to partner with AUS to bring this unique and inspiring international symposium to the Emirate’s educational community. In this day and age, it is extremely important to highlight the exceptional, positive and innovative contributions of young Muslims and of those with a commitment to sympathetically preserving the heritage of the Islamic world on the one hand and – on the other - progressing the continuing achievements and contributions of contemporary Islamic civilization in a globalized world today.

She added “The experts participating in the symposium will surely enrich our perspectives and broaden our horizons with their diverse contributions’.

AUS Chancellor Dr. Björn Kjerfve expressed satisfaction for having the conference at AUS. This is a result of the university’s strong ties with the Sharjah Museums Department. “Organizing this conference also comes as part of the university’s strategy based on the vision of its President His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah to engage organically with local and regional societies and to play its role in progress and development,” he added.

The two-day symposium, which will take place in the Main Building of AUS, will consist of three main sessions

The first session, Education and Research” will bring together scholars, historians and other experts involved in the digital preservation of Islamic manuscripts, artifacts, and material culture.

The next session, entitled “The Sciences - Tackling the Challenges of our World” is set to highlight noted scientists and environmental activists engaged in pioneering projects that further the time-honored relationship between Islam and science. Participating panelists will present their advanced research on topics ranging from cancer research and genetics to climate change and water security.

The final session, “Arts and New Media” is devoted to celebrating the colorful, varied and constantly evolving relationship between Islamic Civilization in the broadest sense and the multiple creative disciplines that either arose from it or continue a creative and dynamic dialogue with it. Here, a selection of renowned artists and new media practitioners will present and discuss their latest projects, many of which now have started to impact not only those interested in art and culture, but globalized society at large.

The symposium also aims to serve as a creative platform for meetings, debate, brainstorming and discussions between participating panelists and attendees. To this end, each session will conclude with a panel discussion, in which audience members will also have the opportunity to meaningfully interact with the speakers.
