The Children’s Programme at the 33rd Sharjah International Book Fair, held from 5-15 November, and which is always an attraction for kids across the region and their parents and teachers, has been announced, with more events and creative opportunities than ever before.
The Book Fair is always especially attractive to children, with more than 200 activities running every day. The range of activities on offer is immense, with a broad range of objectives, from exposing them to regional and international authors and books to introducing the love of the written word at a young age – something children carry throughout their lives.
This year’s programme has expanded to include 242 workshops, 2 plays, and dozens of interactive sessions at Sharjah’s many world-class educational facilities. Of the 480 -plus activities being run, a selection will give a flavour of the range of opportunities on offer.
Colored Buttons is an art workshop, run every day from 11-15 November from 10:00-11:00 (except the 14th, when it is 17:00-18:00). “Who said that the button is only used for fastening a shirt or trousers?”, asks the organizer. With the help of several multi-colored buttons, children can build a house, decorating a tree and make a gift for a birthday.
The Amazing Comics Art Workshop will again be a very attractive show to the guests of the Book Fair, where everyone enters the amazing world of caricatures, which brilliantly depicts many of the timeless events in the minds of the audience. The guest artist is the fastest cartoonist in the Middle East. This very popular session will be run from 10:30-11:30 and 17:00-18:00 every day of the Fair.
A session focused more on children’s parents is “How To make Children Life Long Readers: Parents’ role in developing reading at home.” This includes tips for parents on why they should read to their kids, when to start reading to them, what to read to them right from birth, and how to do so. It also discusses selecting books for kids at different age levels, techniques of reading to kids, introducing short Arabic poems, similar to nursery rhymes, to children, and why reading poetry is so important to promote and enhance children’s reading skills. This workshop will be run every day from 8-11 November from 18:10-19:10.
Countless more activities have been announced which will ensure a packed programme for the duration of the Book Fair. “Jad in Four Seasons” is a stage show filled with direct scientific experiments, beautiful dances, and charming music. “Kharboush Gang”, held in an amazing theatrical atmosphere within which the Fair’s audience has the chance to watch a play inspired by a Charles Dickens’ masterpiece. “My mobile Theatre”, by contrast, is a funny way of bringing children to books, involving them in role-playing throughout.
A puppet theatre is always a favourite of children around the world, and that is reflected in the Children’s Programme at SIBF too. And “I’m the Narrator”, “Sand-painting”, “Looking at Learning”, “Reading in the Digital Age”, “Storytelling, “Creative Writing”, ‘Little Journalist”, “Children’s Library” and “My Marine Notebook” make up a mere selection of the array of substantive workshops and fun activities which make up this year’s Children’s Programme at the Sharjah International Book Fair.
