Sharjah Museums Department (SMD) today unveiled a range of new online services set to enhance the experience of visitors wishing to explore the emirate’s unique heritage.
The additions to the department’s website, announced today at the Arabian Travel Market (ATM) in Dubai, will enable visitors to book educational workshops, view publications and browse some of the museums’ collections and galleries online.
The SMD expects the new features to make it much easier for tourists to plan their trips and get the most out of Sharjah’s historic and cultural attractions.
Visitors to the SMD’s museums already benefit from a host of distinguished services including multi-language Wifi audio guides, disabled access points and maternity facilities. The SMD said it constantly strives to provide facilities that meet international standards of best practice so that all visitors enjoy a fulfilling experience.
This year’s ATM, the biggest travel and hospitality exhibition in the region, comes as Sharjah celebrates its year as Arab Capital of Tourism.
It also coincides with the completion of renovation work to restore Sharjah Fort (“Al Hisn”), the jewel in the crown of Sharjah’s heritage attractions. The majestic fort, which has served as a royal residence as well as a centre of government and justice, represents the very essence of Sharjah, its heritage and people.
Now returned to its former glory, Al Hisn offers visitors a uniquely engaging journey through the emirate’s history.
Manal Ataya, Director General of the SMD, said: “This year marks a hugely significant one for Sharjah, and the Arabian Travel Market presents an excellent opportunity to promote the emirate’s rich cultural diversity on a platform that attracts some of the leading companies and decision makers in the tourism sector.
“With Al Hisn the centerpiece of Sharjah’s history welcoming visitors once more, and with our proud designation of Arab Capital of Tourism, Sharjah is really cementing its place on the global tourism map. The ATM is the ideal stage for Sharjah to tap new markets as we strive to further increase the levels of international visitors heading here.”
Thousands of visitors have flocked to the SMD’s stand at ATM, which started on Monday and ends on Thursday, to learn about the department’s key role in developing Sharjah’s tourism sector. The department is showcasing its offerings which include the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization, Sharjah Art Museum and Sharjah Maritime Museum and promoting the emirate as an attractive destination for regional and international visitors.
Visitors to the stand have been able to find out about the SMD’s exciting new educational program aimed at children and families on holiday in the emirate. The ‘Fly Around Sharjah’ initiative is a series of fun and engaging workshops on traditional crafts such as ceramics and Islamic patterns.
Catering for visitors with special needs is another priority for the SMD. Enhanced disabled facilities are available at several of the museums, including entry ramps and elevators for people in wheelchairs.
The SMD has participated in several international tourism exhibitions and conferences this year including the China Outbound Travel and Tourism Market (COTTM) and the prestigious ITB Berlin.
