Sharjah Museums Department today hosted workshops, games and traditional Emirati activities for people with different disabilities and their families at a special event to celebrate Haq Al Laila.
The event, held at Sharjah Maritime Museum, was attended by youngsters with different disabilities, as well as those with conditions such as autism, Thalassemia and Down’s Syndrome.
Activities included competitions, entertainment workshops as well as music, songs and traditional Emirati games.
The children also received a wide variety of candies and sweets an important part of the Haq Al Laila tradition.
Another highlight of a fun and educational morning was a surprise visit from Alia and Hamdan, the cartoon characters that promote SMD’s offerings to children.
Celebrated throughout The Gulf, Haq Al Lailah takes place every mid-Shaaban about 15 days before the holy month of Ramadan and sees Emirati children in traditional clothes go door-to-door collecting sweets, nuts and treats to fill tote bags known as Kharyta.
Today marks the fifth successive year that SMD has participated in the festivities, as part of its ‘Because We Care’ social responsibility initiative.
Manal Ataya, Director-General of SMD, said: “The aim is to engage with the community, and bring an important tradition to the attention of the younger generation, particularly those with different disabilities.
“Part of our mandate at SMD is to reinforce local customs and traditions by providing inclusive opportunities for the whole community to get involved.”
Haq Al Leilah also serves to remind children that the most sacred month of the year is very close and that they need to prepare for this spiritual period.
Today’s Haq Al Laila event was organised by SMD in partnership with many childrens’ hospitals, support centres and charities from across the Emirates.
Sharjah Museums Department will also organize a Hag Al Leila event at Sharjah Heritage Museum on Wednesday 3 June 2015. The audience will enjoy various traditional activities that will run over two sessions: between 10 a.m-1 p.m. and from 4 p.m-6 p.m.
