August may be the hottest time of the year in the UAE, but that hasn't stopped Sharjah Girl Guides from organizing two summer camps for more than 100 girls. The programme, which continued for 10 days and ended today, featured a variety of challenging activities for girls aged 7 to 11 (brownies) and 12 to 15 (guides).
Be Innovative, a summer camp dedicated to guides, introduced them to the exciting world of robotics and inventions through a series of workshops. From programming mini-robots to building a giant Rube Goldberg machine, the guides had to work in teams and think outside the box as they carried out tests and evaluated the results.
By constructing simple devices and integrating them into a larger, more complex system, as was the case with the Rube Goldberg machine, the teams engaged in open-ended design and unleashed their creativity. The camp ended on a fun and light-hearted note with a series of water-themed activities, enabling the guides to improve their social skills and make new friends.
At Sharjah Girl Guides, we always place great emphasis on leadership and teamwork, while supporting the girls physical and mental development so that they may play constructive roles in their society. We believe that the newly acquired skills will be a permanent beacon for the rest of their lives,†said Shaikha Al Shamsi, Assistant Manager at Sharjah Girl Guides.
Meanwhile, an enthusiastic group of brownies participated in Camps of the Champs, where they had the opportunity to take part in challenging games and exercises such as freestyle gymnastics. The highlight of this camp was a refreshing field trip to Iceland Water Park that saw the brownies participate in water-themed teambuilding activities as well as other thrilling aqua games.
The fun factor is crucial to the success of our workshops, because it makes the girls more attentive and maximizes their engagement. The more they enjoy themselves, the more likely they will remember what they learnt, commented Shaikha Al Shamsi.
Sharjah Girl Guides hosts year-round workshops and programmes, including spring, summer, and winter camps. The organisation also adopts a motivational system that enables girls to earn badges in various fields. All guides who participated in Be Innovative camp received the Robotics interest badge, while brownies who completed Camps of the Champs received the Sports badge.
