Bee’ah, the Middle East’s leading award-winning fully integrated environment and waste management company, has announced the launch of the annual Sharjah Environment Awareness Award (SEAA) competition and the Interschool Recycling Competition (ISRC) for the academic year 2015-2016. The announcement came at a press conference held on the 28th of September at Bee’ah’s Headquarters, revealing the event on behalf of the Bee’ah School of Environment (BSOE) team, headed by Meera Taryam. The two competitions seek to develop community engagement and environmental sustainability, and will culminate with a prestigious awards ceremony to reward the winners in June 2016.
His Highness, Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammad Al-Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council, Ruler of Sharjah, saw the need to disseminate a culture of environmental awareness amongst all members of society, especially students in all schools. As a result the SEAA is an on-going competition launched by Bee’ah in 2010, it’s environmental education program, through the Bee’ah School of Environment to accomplish this goal. More than 250 different schools and nurseries have participated in the SEAA over the past years and over 40 schools have been awarded for their outstanding efforts in their initiative towards protecting the environment. The participating schools actively involve their students in a range of creative environmental projects and art-craft environmental educational exhibitions based on the 3R’s (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) and saving the environment’s natural resources.
Speaking on the success of previous SEAA ceremonies held by Bee’ah, Meera Taryam, Director of Environment Services & Education at Bee’ah said; “At the heart of our mission, we aim to inspire and reward young people for their hard work and dedication to ecological issues in our region. The level of professionalism demonstrated by previous year’s nominees was outstanding, and we have seen growing commitment to environmental awareness over time”.
To further spread environmental awareness as well as encourage students to learn about waste reduction, in support of its waste collection division, Tandeef, Bee’ah launched the Interschool Recycling Competition (ISRC) held between all the participating schools in the BSOE initiative to collect paper, plastic and aluminium materials. The results of the ISRC are posted on the BSOE website on a monthly basis and the winner of the competition (the school which collects the highest tonnage of recyclables) receives a cash prize as well as dedicated recycling bins from Tandeef.
Meera spoke of her excitement for the upcoming competitions by saying; “We are looking forward to another year of inventive and creative involvement in both environmental and sustainability issues. Our participants are known to reveal exceptional knowledge of our core philosophy, and demonstrate creative methods of communicating this in their communities and to our panel of judges.”
She added: “Our past participants exceeded all of our expectations and proved their level of understanding to be exceptional. We witnessed highly innovative ideas exploring solutions to some of the most pressing environmental issues of our time. Additionally students and teachers have played a vital role in raising awareness about the issues we are passionately pursuing here at Bee’ah.”
The award ceremony to conclude the competitions will host a growing audience, which has continued to expand year after year. As Bee’ah moves towards their future vision for Sharjah, the community has shown increasing support for a shared cultural understanding and a common desire for environmental protection.
The SEAA and ISRC demonstrate a powerful ability for enhancing environmental awareness and support for the latest developments created by the Bee’ah School of Environment. The relationship between Bee’ah, students, teachers and the wider public continues to thrive and the competitions recognise and reward those most deserving of greater appreciation.
