Sharjah World Championships week, organised by the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority (SCTDA), from 17 to 20 December 2015, witnessed a historical win with Norway’s Marit Stromoy becoming the first-ever woman champion in the 32-year history of UIM F1 H20 World Championship through an outright win at the Sharjah Grand Prix. With this win, Sharjah has etched its name in history of UIM F1 H20 World Championship as the city that organized and hosted this round of the event.
Sharjah witnessed four days of exciting pageantry as thousands attended the event underlining the value of the event to the emirate and contributing to the extraordinary success of the World Championships week.
Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qassimi, Chairman of Sharjah Media Corporation and Sharjah Media Centre, crowned UIM F1 H20 World Champions at the end of a tournament hosted by the Emirate of Sharjah for the 16th consecutive year, and held in Khalid Lagoon under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah.
Stromoy, who started off from fourth in the sixth and final race on the 2015 F1 calendar, held off the chasing pair of Carella and Torrente to finish the 43-lap race 4.70 seconds ahead of Team Abu Dhabi’s Carella and a further 12.73 seconds clear of Victory Team’s Torrente.
Crowds erupted in cheering Stromoy as she received her winner’s trophy from Sheikh Sultan Bin Ahmad Al Qasimi, Chairman of Sharjah Media Corporation and Sharjah Media Centre, in the presence of HE Khalid Jasim Al Midfa, Chairman of SCTDA, the organizer of the event; HE Ali Salem Al Midfa, Chairman of Sharjah International Airport Authority and Chairman of Sharjah International Marine Sports Club; UIM President Raffaele Chiulli and F1 promoter Nicola di San Germano, among others.
The positions at the end of the Sharjah Grand Prix — the sixth and final round of the F1 H20 World Championship held at the Khalid Lagoon on Friday: 1. Marit Stromoy (Norway — Team EMIC); 2. Alex Carella (Italy — Team Abu Dhabi); 3. Shaun Torrente (USA — Victory Team); 4. Erik Stark (Sweden — Emirates Team); 5. Sami Selio (Finland — Mad-Croc Baba Racing Team); 6. Jonas Andersson (Sweden — Team Sweden); 7. Ahmad Al Hameli (UAE — Emirates Team); 8. Jesper Forss (Sweden — Team Sweden); 9. Nader Bin Hendi (UAE — Victory Team); and 10. Christophe Larigot (France — Team EMIC).
Sharjah also witnessed another exceptional event where hundreds of enthusiastic fans added new vibrancy to the excitement of the Sharjah Water Festival, as well as the Sharjah World Championship, with the much-awaited UIM-ABP Aquabike Class Pro Circuit World Championship - Grand Prix of Sharjah, organised by SCTDA, in collaboration with the Sharjah International Marine Sports Club.
The Aquabike Championship is hosted by the emirate for the first time provided a fun atmosphere as the new Sharjah World Championship is now set to become an annual event in Sharjah’s calendar.
The first day of UIM-ABP Aquabike Class Pro Circuit World Championship started with free practice sessions in the morning followed by several events such as the Ski Ladies GP1, Ski Division GP1, Runabout GP1, and Freestyle events and the Pole Position. The final day of the event includes the World Championships of the Ski Ladies, Ski Division Freestyle and Runabout. With over 60 registered aqua bikers, the first day of the Championship witnessed a huge presence of the public and drivers.
Positions at the end of UIM-ABP Aquabike Class Pro Circuit World Championship are: Beatriz Curtinhal the winner of Ski Ladies GP1, Kevin Reiterer the winner of Ski Division GP1, Rok Florjancic the winner of Freestyle and Yousef Al Abdulrazzaq the winner of Runabout GP1.
