Sharjah was selected as one of only 50 cities worldwide to receive an ambassador from ITB Berlin as part of its 50th anniversary celebrations. ITB which is the premier travel and trade exhibition in the German capital has always received large number of trade and public to the show, which Sharjah has participated at for the last 18 years. Sharjah is being recognised for its key role in culture and heritage tourism.
During their visit to Sharjah, the ITB ambassadors Julian Daum and Teresa Baumgarten, witnessed the Sharjah Water Festival and the UIM F1H2O World Championship 2015 Grand Prix of Sharjah, as well as a packed three day tour organizined by the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority to the heart of Sharjah one of the prime heritage tourism locations in the city.
The visit to Heart of Sharjah was a highlight of the visit with Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq) joining hands with SCDTA to receive the ambassadors at a number of museums, traditional houses and heritage Souqs.
On the occasion, His Excellency Khalid Jasim Al Midfa, Chairman of SCTDA, said: “Sharjah has been a regular participant at ITB Berlin for the last consecutive 18 years. As one of the most prestigious travel and tourism events in the world, ITB Berlin is a major platform for Sharjah to showcase our rich portfolio of traditional and contemporary offerings. Sharjah is honoured to figure in ITB Berlin’s list of 50 cities which have been chosen as part of the 50th anniversary celebrations of the high-profile event. We look forward to continued cooperation with ITB (Berlin) as demand remains high from Germany for the tourism offering of Sharjah.”
Hotels in Sharjah received over half a million guests from Europe in 2014, highlighting the emirate’s importance as a popular cultural tourism destination for European tourists, and representing just under a fifth of the hotel number of hotel visitor to the emirate.
Sharjah offers an authentic Arabian atmosphere for tourists from Europe, which is rare to find in some of the Gulf’s ultra-modern cities. Kalba and Dibba Al Hisn, both within Sharjah, are prominent locations where visitors from Europe get to experience the emirate’s natural beauty and participate in outdoor activities at mangroves, mountains and wadis.
Apart from the cultural hotspots and outstanding museums, which are major attractions for visitors from Europe, the tourists also enjoy Sharjah’s beaches on the Arabian Gulf coast which offer safe, white, sandy palm lined beaches with clear blue seas, while Sharjah’s east coast is particularly popular for water sports.
During its participation at ITB Berlin in March 2015, the Sharjah pavilion received many dignitaries and representatives of international destinations. The pavilion offered the exhibition visitors a genuine experience of the emirate’s culture, tourism and traditions.
