Sharjah Heritage Institute is set to organise the Traditional Crafts Forum on the 18th and 19th of January under the title, "Knitting and Embroidery in the UAE". Now in its 10th year, the forum will focus on authentic handicrafts that form part of the textile and fabric industry. Overall, the forum will consist of two parts: craft exhibitions and cultural sessions.

Abdul Aziz Al Musallam, Chairman of Sharjah Heritage Institute, said, "The 10th edition of the Traditional Crafts Forum is a culmination of our diligent work and dedication to establish a regular platform for our heritage. Our efforts are guided by the directives of H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, who extends unlimited support to promote national culture and heritage and is committed to placing heritage as one of the top priorities of national and community work in the Emirate of Sharjah.

The SHI focuses on several aspects of the forum, as it has done in past years. These include the importance of preserving traditional crafts, highlighting their authenticity, offering financial and moral support to traditional crafts, developing their practices and promoting their role and contribution towards preserving local culture. This can be achieved through a great deal of study, research and documentation of local cultural heritage and traditions. The forum also focuses on encouraging craftsmen, developing their skills and improving their living conditions."

He clarified that the forum includes a variety of heritage activities and scientific sessions in addition to an exhibition for the art of traditional knitting and embroidery. The forum will also highlight a live demonstration of yarn manipulation and embroidery, with the participation of experienced craftsmen.

Sharjah Heritage Institute organises the forum as part of its endeavour to preserve the heritage for future generations. The institute also aims to increase community awareness regarding the importance of traditional crafts and hopes to shine a light on the role these crafts can play in preserving cultural heritage. This, in summary, will help restore traditional heritage crafts, raise awareness of the heritage among young children and promote the concept of heritage tourism.
