Hotels and hotel apartments in Sharjah reported an all-time high of 100% occupancy in December, as Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority (SCTDA) organised a series of high profile international events and festivals in the emirate, drawing tourists and visitors from across the region and the world.
In December, SCTDA celebrated the ninth year of the Sharjah Water Festival, the introduction of the Sharjah World Championship Week, which included for the sixteenth year the final round of the UIM F1H2O World Championship 2015 Grand Prix and the first year of the UIM-ABP Aquabike Class Pro Circuit World Championship - Grand Prix of Sharjah.
Commenting on the record occupancy in the emirate’s hotels, His Excellency Khalid Jasim Al Midfa, Chairman of SCTDA, said: “The annual events hosted in Sharjah have contributed significantly to the sustained growth of the tourism and hotel sector in the emirate over the past years. Sharjah hotels welcomed around 2 million guests in 2014 led by the strong tourist arrivals during the various festivals and events, and we are set to surpass it in 2015.”
HE Al Midfa said Sharjah hosts many events annually across a varied platform of interests. “This has enabled the emirate to attract thousands of visitors from within the UAE, the region and the world, strengthening the position of Sharjah on the world tourism map as a leading family destination.”
“Organising events that establish Sharjah as a world-class tourism destination for families is one of the most important pillars in SCTDA’s strategy to promote tourism. Under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, and with the support of His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, we have developed several innovative services and tourism products that cater to the interests of tourists from all over the world as we pursue our efforts to achieve the Sharjah Tourism Vision 2021,” he added.
During the year, SCTDA also organised several promotional roadshows in prominent global markets, which have led to a number of cooperation agreements with tour operators around the world, especially from Germany, Russia, Spain and Scandinavia, contributing to the record increase in the number of hotels guests in the emirate.
Sharjah has strengthened its hospitality infrastructure with excellent hotels and hotel apartments to meet the demands of the growing tourism traffic in the emirate. The number of hospitality facilities in the emirate rose to 105 in 2015, and these include 53 hotels and 52 hotel apartments.
Sharjah has been attracting a large number of families, particularly from the Gulf region, and has positioned itself as a world-class tourist destination for the entire family. The emirate is known for its family friendly atmosphere, excellent tourism facilities and events. Sharjah has also embraced its rich traditions and strong cultural heritage to create a modern tourism industry, and has been recogised as the 'Arab Tourism Capital for Year 2015’ by the Arab Tourism Organisation.
