Sharjah Light Festival 2016 Starts Tomorrow

Sharjah Light Festival will launch its sixth annual light festival today with a variety of innovative shows offering over 23 experiences across the emirate.

Organised by Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority (SCTDA), the Sharjah Light Festival 2016 will be held for 10 days, from February 4 to 13, during which major buildings and landmarks in the emirate will be washed with intricate design and colours using innovative lighting technology based on the theme, 'Travel Across Time'. 

SCTDA said, "As always we have added new and different locations to this year's event to enable maximum number of visitors and public to enjoy the shows. The new locations are University City Hall, Sharjah Center for Astronomy and Space Sciences - Planetarium, Al Qasimia University, Masjid Al Qasimia University, Jubail New Market, Supreme Council for Family Affairs in Sharjah, and the Cultural Palace. Around the Buhairah Corniche you will find selected buildings washed in bright kaleidoscopic colours,  an Infinity Light Tunnel near the water front is disorientating and mesmorizing all at once."

Selected bridges in  Sharjah, the Government Buildings at Al Akd Al Fareed St. Dibba Al Hisn, and Kalba Corniche Park  are also given some exciting touches. All the artistic work is designed by internationally renowned artists meaning that Sharjah is certainly painting its name in style. 

The SCTDA also announced that the festival shows will continue to be held in previous well-known locations, including Al Qasba (Internal Facades), Masjid Al Taqwa (Al Majaz Waterfront), Masjid Al Noor, Masjid Al Maghfira, Al Majaz Amphitheatre, Cultural Square, Al Majaz Waterfront, Khalid Lagoon Corniche Light Design Show, and you will see the light festival logo at the main gateways to the city. On the East Coast of the Emirate, Sharjah University - Khorfakkan, and Masjid Ammar bin Yasser in Al Dhaid are also retouched in colour. 

The Sharjah Light Festival shows will be held every day from 6.30 pm to 11 pm on weekdays, and from 6.30 pm until 12 midnight during the weekends. The festival is expected to achieve 30% increase in the number of visitors this year compared to the previous year. 

As the first of its kind in the region, Sharjah Light Festival is one of the most important events organised by SCTDA and attracts increasing numbers of visitors every year from inside and outside the UAE. The Authority has been promoting the festival in all its target markets through annual roadshows and specialised exhibitions in the tourism and travel sectors. 

The list of sponsors for the Sharjah Light Festival 2016 includes Co-sponsors Sharjah Municipality, Sharjah Police Headquarters, Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority, Sharjah Transport, SHUROOQ, Sharjah Civil Defence Department, Copthorne Hotel, and Mega Mall. Nomada is the Partner for the festival while Air Arabia is the Official Airline. The Media Sponsors are Al Khaleej, Sharjah Media Corporation,  and Channel 4, 107.8 FM. 

SCTDA is utilising the latest technology with minimal power consumption for the Sharjah Light Festival shows to provide the public stunning displays of colour using a combination of light, music and eye-catching designs.

In its first year, the event succeeded in saving 30% of potential energy consumption, while during the second year the savings rate reached 45% and in subsequent years it rose to 60%. With the use of state of the art technology and latest innovative methods, the energy savings rate is expected to increase further this year.
