Int’l Workshop For Arabia’s Biodiversity To Launch Monday In Sharjah
(7 February 2016)

The 17th Annual International Conservation Workshop for Arabia’s Biodiversity, organised by the Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA), will be held on Monday at the Breeding Centre for Endangered Arabian Wildlife in Sharjah under the patronage of H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah.

The four-day workshop aims to support international efforts and provide an opportunity for discussion and exchanging of ideas about the ways of conservation of natural life and biodiversity.

Commenting on this workshop, Hana Saif Al Suwaidi, Chairperson of the Environment and Protected Area Authority in Sharjah, said: "We have organised this workshop for the 17th consecutive year, giving us a good opportunity to host many experts and professionals from all over the world to discuss the intricacies of natural life conservation. By launching this edition of the workshop, the emirate of Sharjah proves again its pioneering role in the field of environmental action.

It has made quantum leaps in this regard by harnessing all its potential to support international efforts and their integration in order to achieve the common objectives, namely: to develop awareness, realise natural balance and prevent the destruction of natural resources."

Al Suwaidi added: "to accomplish this vision, we should all work collectively by supporting the exerted efforts in this respect. Sharjah has witnessed, over the years, outstanding environmental activity aimed to restore natural balance to the ecological system. This has been manifested in the set of decisions issued by the emirate, which proves its leading roles in the domains of conservation of the environment, natural balance, and preservation of the biodiversity system."

In its current edition, the International Workshop, which hosts a large number of regional and international experts and specialists in environmental areas, will address a number of themes that fall into two main categories: the first is the theme of classification, which includes a review of the status of conservation of land and sea mammals in the region with the aim of assessment of the Regional Red List of all land mammals.

The participants in the workshop will carry out, within this framework, an overall review of the status of sea mammals in the region. Moreover, the role of protected areas in the conservation of biodiversity will be reviewed.

The second theme will address the veterinary aspect by highlighting the control of diseases in the region and the ways of coping with them in light of the challenge posed by tuberculosis. In this context, experts will also address the nature of the difficulties and repercussions of the problem of the collective capture of animals.
