Established in 2006 and relaunched in 2010, Maraya Art Centre has grown from an exhibition space in Sharjah to a full-fledged arts centre with a curated programme of events, showcasing a roster of Middle Eastern and international artists, and state of the art facilities tailored for and open to the public. In 2016, Maraya Art Centre now extends its cultural reach with Maraya Art Park, the Maraya Archive, 1971- Design Space, and the recently opened 1971 Design Store, all which encompass independent programme of activities.
“The remit of Maraya Art Centre has grown exponentially but organically to represent the diverse interests of our stakeholders and community, from some of the region’s most respected artists and designers, to the youngest family members who participate in our workshops staffed by world-renowned creative personalities,” said Ahmed Al Qaseer- COO of Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq). “In 2016, Maraya Art Centre, a key part of Shurooq, will expand its international and regional reach while underscoring the vital role which Sharjah plays in the UAE’s cultural landscape through a broad and compelling programme of events and educational opportunities.”
Maraya Art Centre will host four key exhibitions featuring more than 100 artists, and a variety of workshops, performances and activitiesled and inspired by industry experts this year.Maraya Art Centre will also participate in the three major art fairs in March through collaboration and commission, as well as supporting the ongoing Artist Residencies taking place in Sharjah and globally, creating opportunities for UAE based artists internationally.
“We are so proud to welcome 2016 with such an eventful calendar which showcases the strength of the cultural development in Sharjah as well as the necessity to provide it for the public,” said Giuseppe Moscatello, Director of Maraya Art Centre. “The Centre has come a long way since we started six years ago, and through the determination and vision of the team, the support from our partners and of course, the positive response from the public, we are inspired to create a programme that fulfils all expectations as well as continue to encourage the cultural interest in Sharjah and UAE as a whole.”
