Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival Hosts International And Award Winning Authors

Alison McGhee "the New York Times Bestselling Author" to attend the Festival


 

Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival (SCRF) in its eighth edition, held from 20-30 April, will host a number of international leading and awards winning authors, novelists and artists specialized in children and youth literature. Furthermore, their works led the bestselling list in many of the major international newspapers.

Some of the best writers participating in SCRF is the author Alison McGhee. The American writer and Professor of creative writing at Metropolitan State University, produced a number of novels, poems, picture books and memoirs. Her picture book “Someday” was a #1 New York Times bestseller, while “Shadow Baby” was nominated for Pulitzer Prize. She also won four Minnesota Book Awards and her work has been translated into 21 languages.

The American Award-winning author of young adults fiction Tom McNeal will also attend this edition of Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival. He will be speaking about best fiction works taking place in northwest Nebraska where he spent his summers after spending his childhood in California. Tom has received three California Book Awards, the James A. Michener Award and won a number of National Book awards. His short story “What Happened to Tully” was made into an award-winning independent film called “Tully”.

From the UK, the Philippines born author Candy Gourlay specialized in children literature will also showcase her work during the festival. Gourlay has won the Crystal Kite Prize for Europe twice – for her debut novel “Tall Story” in 2011 and for her ghost story “Shine” in 2014. “Tall Story” was nominated for the Carnegie Medal and shortlisted for 13 prizes, also winning the Philippines' National Children's Book Award, while “Shine” was nominated for the Guardian Fiction Prize.

SCRF will also host Miriam Moss, the British fiction author specialized in picture books, poetry and short stories, who won numerous awards and has produced more than 75 books, including 30 picture books, poetry and short stories including her famous book Doctor Molly's Medicine Case (Walker Books). Her recently published novel, “Girl On A Plane” is based on her own experience of being hijacked.

Another international name to attend the festival is Angela McAllister. The British author, artist and children fiction books writer, won a number of international awards. Her profile includes 80 books for children. Her work has been adapted for the stage and translated into many languages. She has come to care passionately about sharing these stories, which remind us of common hopes and fears, values and humour among people of all cultures and across time.

SCRF is also honored to host the British children’s picture books author and presenter on Cbeebie Carrie Burnell. She was named in the Observer’s top ten children’s presenters and also featured in the Guardian’s 2011 list of 100 most inspirational women. Her bestselling picture books “Snowflakes and Mermaid” have won critical acclaim.

Visitors will be delighted to meet the Philippines illustrator and children author Sergio Bumatay III awarded Peter Pan Prize by the International Board on Books for Young People in Sweden and winner of the Encouragement Prize at the NOMA Concours in Japan. He also won the grand prize in the Daekyo Eye Level Children’s Literature Award in South Korea for his picture book, The Best Book in the World
