Can you spell autochthonous? City Centre Sharjah wants children and mums to put on their thinking caps this back to school season for a fun word challenge that will test their spelling skills and reinforce the importance of reading.
As part of its Back to Books campaign and to celebrate International Literacy Day this month, City Centre Sharjah which is owned and operated by Majid Al Futtaim – the leading shopping mall, communities, retail and leisure pioneer across the Middle East, Africa and Asia – has brought back the Spelling Bee contest by popular demand for a second year. After the overwhelming success of the inaugural competition, which saw more than 60 school children participate and receive certificates and prizes, this year’s edition is bigger with the mall being transformed into an exciting game show where school children and their mothers can join the war of words and compete for the title of the Spelling Bee champion.
“Spelling bee competitions are a valuable educational experience for children. The feedback from parents for our first competition last year was so encouraging that we decided that we must host another season this year,” said Mohammed Al Rais, Senior Mall Manager – City Centre Sharjah.
“And this year we are creating more fun and great moments for our visitors by involving mothers in some healthy competition, as well. We are expecting a bigger turnout for this charged-up battle for all those wonderful prizes.”
The mall is encouraging families to participate by sending invitations to schools and through their social media channels. After they sign up, participants will be given a list of more than 1,000 words that they will then be quizzed on in thrilling live contests at the mall with an audience to cheer them on.
Winners in the kids and teenagers group will receive certificates and a brand-new Apple iPad. All participants will receive a school bag stuffed with colourful stationery. Mums who score the best will also receive acknowledgment certificates along with a mall gift card worth AED 1,000 each.
City Centre Sharjah’s initiative to instil a love for reading with engaging activities for the entire family this month reiterates Majid Al Futtaim’s aim to enhance the community as part of its sustainability strategy, and is in line with the UAE government’s efforts to create a new generation of scientists, intellectuals and innovators.
Spelling Bee contests help children build their vocabulary, improve their spellings and increase their knowledge about the origins of words. It also develops confidence and a competitive spirit among them.
At the same time, City Centre Sharjah has collaborated with UAE Red Crescent for a book donation drive where visitors are encouraged to donate children’s books all month and help put a smile on the faces of underprivileged children in the country.
Customers can also win all month by shopping for AED 200 at City Centre Sharjah. They have an opportunity to enter a weekly draw to win AED 5,000 worth mall gift cards. Shoppers can double their chances of winning at select stores at the mall, as well.
