In a major drive to increase its online reach, the Sharjah Department of eGovernment (DeG) will be connecting millions of social media users to 48 government bodies during the Middle East’s largest ICT event through its hashtag #Sharjah_at_GITEX.

In keeping with a strategy of innovation and implementation, DeG will unify various departments’ messaging through one voice, sharing images, interactive videos and audio clips during GITEX Technology Week, a gathering of some of the most influential technology industrialists, public sector authorities and corporate decision makers in the world.

The hashtag will bring social network users news as-it-happens, covering the large number of events and activities held at the Sharjah Pavilion. It is a massive leap forward in terms of information sharing – according to the 2017 global report from ‘We Are Social’, the Middle East ranks first in the world for the increase of social media, with a staggering 47% growth in the past 12 months, and mobile social media up by 44%.

Sheikh Khalid bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Director General of DeG, said: “Adopting #Sharjah_at_GITEX reflects our commitment in reaching and strengthening our bonds with the regional business community, potential global investors and the public in general.”

He continued: “This is a region where digital platforms play an essential role of messaging and keeping with our theme at GITEX of ‘History and Communication’, we are committed to an evolving world of connection and contact. The introduction of this hashtag provides immediate information and delivers the news that matters directly to users wherever they may be.”

#Sharjah_at_GITEX will be activated on the first day of GITEX 2017, taking place from October 8-12 at Dubai World Trade Centre, and will be managed by a specialised media team to ensure the delivery of messages of Sharjah’s government departments and agencies to the largest relevant audience.

The hashtag reflects DeG’s mission to not only establish and implement a comprehensive digital infrastructure, the massive investment in its long-term ICT strategy also incorporates future projects to drive Sharjah government’s digital transformation and integration.

GITEX Technology Week, now in its 37th year, is the largest ICT event in the MENA region and the world’s third largest ICT trade show.
