1st Strategic Planning Congress In Sharjah
(15 June 2009)

Workshops on Balanced Scorecard Approach and Blue Ocean Strategy to be conducted by American University of Sharjah

Government officials, business leaders, and corporate decision makers in Sharjah will be sharing their best practices in strategic planning on Tuesday, June 16, at the 1st Strategic Planning Congress organized by the Alleem Knowledge Center (AKC).

Dr. Rashid Alleem, founder and chairman of AKC, announced that Dr Imran Zualkernan, Assistant Professor of the College of Engineering, American University of Sharjah, will facilitate two workshops on the Balanced Scorecard Approach and the Blue Ocean Strategy.

The Balanced Scorecard is a performance management tool for measuring whether the smaller-scale operational activities of a company are aligned with its larger-scale objectives in terms of vision and strategy.

On the other hand, Blue Ocean Strategy is a business strategy that promotes creating new market space or "Blue Ocean" rather than competing in an existing industry.

Dr. Zualkernan has taught at the University of Minnesota and at Penn State University and has research publications that span cognitive science, management science and computer science and engineering.

The congress will be held at the Radisson Hotel in Sharjah and will be the third of a series of congresses lined up by AKC this year. In February, the first congress discussed sustainable development, while in April the topic was about project management.

Dr. Alleem commented: “In this congress, we examine the most important concepts and processes involved in planning and strategic management. By learning these concepts, and reviewing the steps, you will be on your way to understanding the current best practice approaches to the strategic management of today’s organizations.”

Dr. Alleem is concurrently the Director General of the Hamriyah Free Zone Authority and Sharjah Department of Seaports and Customs.
