Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority (SCTDA) yesterday officially announced that the emirate of Sharjah will play host to the UIM F1 Powerboat World Championship – Sharjah Grand Prix 2009, the world’s most spectacular water sport competition, which is scheduled to be held on Sharjah’s Khalid Lagoon from 10 to 11 December 2009.
The announcement was made in a press conference that was held on the sidelines of the Arabian Travel Market (ATM) 2009, which is being held in Dubai from 5 to 8 May. Sharjah’s delegation for ATM 2009 represents the emirate’s largest ever participation in the industry’s leading travel and tourism exhibition.
The signing ceremony was held at the SCTDA’s stand, and was attended by H.E. Sheikh Sultan Bin Ahmed Al Qassimi, Chairman of the SCTDA, who signed the agreement with H.E. Nicolo di San Germano, the UIM F1 Promoter.
In his statement on the occasion, Sheikh Sultan Bin Ahmed Bin Sultan Al Qassimi attributed the resounding success Sharjah has had as host city for final round of UIM F1 Powerboat World Championship over the past eight years to the wise directives of H.H. Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, UAE Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, and the unstinting support of H.H. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed bin Sultan Al Qassimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah.
Al Qassimi said that hosting the prestigious event for the ninth consecutive year confirms once again Sharjah’s leading position and its widely recognized ability to host world-class sporting events. He added that the emirate of Sharjah is increasingly coming under the international spotlight as an ideal venue for major sport, heritage, cultural and entertainment events.
He reiterated Sharjah’s commitment, represented by the SCTDA, to diligently pursue promotional activities in all local, regional and international platforms with the aim of luring major sporting and economic events to the emirate.
Mr Di San Germano stated that Sharjah has achieved a series of international successes in hosting this major world event, whose various stages are organized in several countries across Europe and East Asia, and lauded the outstanding efforts exerted by the SCTDA in organizing the championship: "The Sharjah-hosted final round of the UIM F1 Powerboat World Championship is increasingly becoming the most eagerly awaited event in the powerboat competition calendar, and is grabbing ever-greater international attention.”
"Thanks to the SCTDA’s efforts, Sharjah has added a level of value to the UIM F1 Powerboat World Championship during the last eight years has been unmatched in the history of the championship," he concluded.
To date, Sharjah has won international awards for best event organizer in 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2007, as well as an international media award for ideal organizing in 2001.
