FOCP, Sharjah Expo Center Organise Cancer Awareness Campaign
(4 October 2009)

Friends of Cancer Patients Society (FOCP), in collaboration with Health Education Department in Sharjah’s Medical District, organized a Breast cancer awareness campaign held at Sharjah Expo Center within (Sharjah Ramadan Festival 2009). The initiative forms part of FOCP’s regular activities and is consistent with its strategy to raise awareness in local communities.

The campaign included a number of educational presentations on self-examination, delivered by FOCP Secretary General Dr Sawsan Al Madhi. The presentations were made in private at designated clinic. Educational booklets and brochures were distributed by volunteers taking part in the campaign, headed by Al Anood Al Abdul, Head of the Volunteers Committee. The educational materials included causes of the disease, means of protection and early detection, and the negative impact of smoking on the disease.

Speaking on the occasion, H.E. Ameera BinKaram, President of FOCP’s Board of Trustees, said: “Our communities lack awareness on the importance of regular check-ups for early detection of cancer. We do not want ladies to wait until they can come to our centre for check-ups or treatment, we want them to be able to do self-examinations wherever they are, and through educational campaigns such as this we are trying to create a regular check-up culture among the women of the UAE and the region. Our aim is to raise awareness of how to prevent cancer and how it can be controlled and dealt with if detected early”.

“This initiative is part of a series of activities organized by the FOCP in different areas throughout the year to help us achieve our goals and spread awareness about cancer in communities. We at the FOCP would like to extend our thanks and appreciation to the Sharjah Expo Center and the Sharjah Medical District for their continuous support in our endeavours,” she added.
