The “Knowledge Without Borders” (KWB) project will visit the Al Saja’a area in Sharjah on Thursday, December 24th, to distribute books and personal libraries to 150 families. The visit, which will start at 11:00 am, shall be held under the patronage of Sheikh Khalid Bin Abdullah Bin Sultan Al Qassimi, Chairman of the Sharjah Ports and Customs Authority and the support of the organizational committee of Knowledge Without Borders.
The program of events will include an introductory speech from Mr. Marwan Jassim Al Sarkal, CEO of Shurooq, CEO of Al Qasba, and VP of the KWB organizing committee. Following the speech, one local resident of Al Saja’a will say a few words to address the crowd, which will be participating in an “Al Tumina” session as well as a dialogue covering the importance of reading in spurring social development. The program will be concluded by the project anthem and a variety of cultural games and contests.
Knowledge Without Borders recently had an extensive presence at the Sharjah International Book Fair 2009, which was held from November 11-21 at Sharjah Expo Centre. During the expo, the project’s committee purchased around 65,000 books from the exhibition in order to distribute them to Sharjah families by the beginning of 2010.
Commenting on the organization’s recent endeavours, Mr. Rashid Al Kous, Manager of Cultural Programs at KWB, said that the organization is laying the foundation for an exceptional year of public programmes. “Right now the Knowledge Without Borders project is set to visit all the selected areas in Sharjah—including Al Saja’a—as per the pre-defined 2009 timeline,” says Al Kous. “We are happy with the progress made in the last year and are excited to support additional projects during 2010 in line with the vision of government leaders.”
The Knowledge Without Borders project is sponsored by the Emirate of Sharjah—the cultural capital of UAE—and comes as a generous initiative from H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah. “As members of the organizing committee, we are dedicated to bringing this unique initiative to the world at large through our continued participation in local and international exhibitions,” concluded Al Kous.
The project hopes to nurture the habit of reading and extend knowledge among UAE-national families in the emirate of Sharjah by providing book libraries free of cost to around 42,000 families. By the end of the project, the organizing committee hopes to create a fully literate Sharjah community with the necessary skills to move forward in an increasingly modern society. By establishing a rich home library in every house in the emirate of Sharjah—which includes a variety of fiction and non-fiction titles catered to the individual family members—the project concentrates on raising awareness of the importance of reading.
