A charity event aiming to “run the world in 80 days” kicked off today on behalf of Manzil, the Sharjah based special needs centre at the DIFC branch of Fitness First health club.
The objective is to run the world in 80 days at Fitness First centres across the UAE and help support people with special needs in the community. Participants will need to register, collect sponsorship and then visit their nearest Fitness First club, choose a running machine and simply begin their run or walk. Registration forms are available from the website (www.runtheworld.ae) or from Fitness First receptions.
Gareth Pearce, General Manager, Fitness First, said, ‘we welcome members and non-members into our clubs to support this great cause, you don’t have to be a fitness fanatic because you can take as long as you like, over 3 days in fact, to complete the minimum 10 km. As long as you are 16 or over and can walk you can join in.’
In addition to Fitness First, the event is being supported by Zurich, who have been committed to supporting Manzil with fundraising activities over the past two years. Aldersgate, the consultancy company and Grayling Momentum are also supporting with organisation and communications respectively.
Harry Hanscomb, Zurich, commented further. ‘Manzil is a fantastic place where children and adults with special needs learn how to make their way in the world. Today, Manzil provides full-time education for students aged 5 – 30, which is all about inclusion - giving students the tools they need to lead productive and happy lives even after they leave the school’.
The event provides people the opportunity to get fit for a worthwhile charity and the organisers hope to raise a substantial sum that will go towards improving Manzil’s facilities and expanding its scope to serve many more people in the community.
