Sharjah Chamber Underscores Need For Significant Environment Conservation Efforts
(12 June 2010)

Chamber And BCSD-UAE Successfully Conclude ’Environment Week’ Initiative

The Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) underlined the need for more significant contributions in the continuing global efforts to preserve the environment and its natural resources. The local chamber stressed that the worldwide campaign can be further reinforced with the adoption and implementation of new strategies and initiatives that fall in line with the main aim of protecting and preserving the environment. The announcement was marked by the successful conclusion of SCCI’s ’Environment Week’ initiative that was organised in cooperation with the Business Council for Sustainable Development-UAE (BCSD-UAE), the local arm of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), which operates under the umbrella of SCCI.

The ’Environment Week’ program, which was held in celebration of World Environment Day 2010, ran from June 5 to 12, 2010. The strong show of support and participation from both the public and private sector complement the local chamber’s strong thrust to promote the role of the industrial and business sectors in supporting green policies and sustainable development strategies in Sharjah—bringing the emirate one step closer in achieving its goal of total sustainable development.

Accompanying the ’Environment Week’ initiative was a three-day environment exposition (June 8-10) that featured environment-themed video documentaries and presentations and also showcased the environment-friendly industrial products and services of participating companies and organizations.

Hussein Mohammed Al Mahmoudi, Director General, SCCI, said, "The preserving and protecting the environment has become one of today’s most pressing concerns globally. Realizing this, the SCCI is calling on both the private and public sectors to continue adopting more environment-friendly initiatives and make more significant contributions that can help in this worldwide effort. We all must join hands and continue to work together towards the collective goal of increasing sustainability, which has been clearly identified as a cornerstone in the development of Sharjah and the rest of the UAE. Moreover, we are humbled and overwhelmed with the strong show of support and participation for the chamber’s ’Environment Week’ initiative. The success of initiatives such as these reflects our keenness to develop and create solutions that will ultimately aid in positioning Sharjah not only as an ideal business and investment venue but as an emirate that is sustainable and ecologically balanced."

The ’Environment Week’ program underlines both the SCCI and BCSD-UAE’s efforts to promote more public awareness on sustainability and the important role it plays towards Sharjah’s growth and development and is in line with the vision of His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, Member of Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, to build an integrated society based on solid and balanced foundations. Companies and organizations that supported ’Environment Week’ include Clipsal, Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (SEWA), Tiger Profiles, Sesam, Mulk Holdings, EcoVentures, Bee’ah, Pierlite Middle East, Goumbook, United Nations Environment Program, Gulftainer and the Middle East Centre for Sustainable Development.
