Student ’Heroes’ Win Green Makeovers And Laptops For Their Schools

H.E. Ali Mehad Al Suwaidi, Acting Director, Ministry of Education, UAE, has recognised student ‘heroes’ for their outstanding results in the recent ‘Heroes of the UAE’ Inter-School Energy and Water Reduction Competition.

Awarded at a ceremony held over three days at University City, Sharjah, were the winning teams; Al Zawra School Ajman, Ibn Al Haitham School Ajman and Al Shoala Private School Sharjah which beat stiff competition to win green audits and makeovers for their schools worth AED 100,000 generously provided by HSBC Bank Middle East Ltd. They took away the grand prize after reducing their per capita consumption of energy and water by 67.2%, 36.6% and 40.71% respectively during a three month period in 2010 over 2009.

First and second runners up teams; Ithen School RAK, Sheikha Bint Saeet School Ajman, Al Hala School Fujairah, Al Rams School RAK ,Raffles International School Dubai and Our Own English High School Sharjah, took away brand new laptops for their schools.

“We were really pleased with the caliber of entries and the schools performances have been inspiring for all of us. The energy and water reduction competition demonstrated how our young minds can address conservation issues facing us today. The competition also demonstrated to students how working together can deliver solutions that will make a difference to our planet,” said Kaltham Al Koheji, Regional Head of Corporate Sustainability for award sponsors HSBC Bank Middle East.

Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak, Managing Director, EWS-WWF added: “The participants have set a great example for how we can all take measures in our daily lives, be it at home, school or work, to save our planet’s natural resources. It is encouraging to see the next generation’s interest in environmental issues, and we all have something to learn from them. We congratulate the schools for their success and hope others will follow suit.”

The Inter-School Energy and Water Reduction Competition was organised by Emirates Wildlife Society (EWS-WWF), Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi and UAE Ministry of Education under the sponsorship of HSBC Bank Middle East Ltd
