Sharjah Museums To Run Exciting Activities And Camps During Summer 2011

The Sharjah Museums Department (SMD) has announced its plans to organise a variety of educational summer camps for children, an initiative through which it is striving to achieve its objectives of providing cultural, educational and social enrichment in interesting and attractive ways.

Speaking on the occasion, Manal Ataya, SMD Director General, said, "This initiative is in line with the directives of H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the UAE Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, to provide an enriching educational and cultural environment and forms part of our approach to adopt a range of programmes and activities that will promote a culture of learning among the public.

"We are constantly working on organising workshops and educational activities that focus on stimulating children’s interest in science, the arts, education and using their free time during the summer productively. At these summer camps children will be able to participate in activities centred on science and art with the aim of improving their learning skills and expanding their knowledge base." she continued.

The Sharjah Discovery Centre will host the Children’s Summer Camp from 26 June to 31 July, under the theme ’Together for a Better Tomorrow’. The aim is to strengthen children’s abilities during their free time and motivate them to be innovative and creative, with the slogan ’Fun, Creativity and Culture’. The camp will include educational workshops on science subjects such as the layers of the earth, the atmosphere, a study of the solar system and outer space, as well as handicraft sessions, exploratory trips, and fun and games, among others.

Examples of the range of topics to be explored in a activities include, the sundial clock and the use of shadows in estimating time to the importance of healthy eating habits.

At Sharjah Science Museum, participants will have the opportunity to enjoy various practical and scientific workshops designed to help raise environmental awareness, identify different natural resources for the development of clean energy, learn about water purification process, as well as how to use solar energy to heat water, from 19 June to 10 July.

Educational activities at the Science Museum will range from those related to astronomy and the solar system, to an introduction to the world of aviation. During the summer camp, the Science Museum will hold unique workshops for children in the art of making chocolate, cotton candy and perfume. In addition, the Science Museum will offer an opportunity for participants to expand their scientific horizons, with spaces allocated to robot installation and manufacturing.

From 20 to 30 June, SMD’s Department of Interpretation and Education is organising a summer programme for children aged 11 to 14 under the theme "Action". Taking place 10:00 am to 1:00 pm daily, the programme will be offered in Arabic during the first week, and in English during the second week.

Dramatic scenes created and inspired by the collections of the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization, the Sharjah Maritime Museum and the Sharjah Art Museum will help children appreciate the historical significance of the objects and the "stories" they can tell by bringing them to life. Sharjah Aquarium will host the closing ceremony and award prizes to participants.
