(6 August 2011)

Sharjah Charity Association (SCA) delivered the first tranche of emergency aid to hundreds of Somali famine-struck people who were displaced by drought.

SCA team gave out food packages to 1200 Somali families at Homr Jabjab and Afjoy in Mogadishu, Somalia’s capital city which is receiving a flow of refugees who come from the Southern regions of the country hit by the worst drought in six decades.

The launch of SCA’s Somalia humanitarian operation was ordered by H. H. Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council member and ruler of Sharjah to help the needy people in Somalia.

The agency is procuring food stuff for its Somalia operation from markets in the neighboring countries, according to Mohammed Hamdan Al Zeri, head of projects at SCA who added that aid packages contain rice, flour, sugar and edible oil.

Earlier, Sheikh Sultan donated AED 10 million to SCA’s Somalia relief operation.
