Kalimat Showcases Award Winning Children’s Literature In Germany
(16 October 2011)

Sharjah-based Kalimat Publishing House, the award-winning publisher of high quality Arabic children’s books, is showcasing a number of its titles alongside 7500 exhibitors from over 110 countries at this year’s Frankfurt Book Fair, the world’s largest trade fair for books.

On show at the event, which kicked off in Frankfurt, Germany, on 12 October, is Ibn Battouta, the first book in a cultural series about the lives, ideas and accomplishments of famous Arab personalities. The book, penned by award winning author Fatima Sharafeddine, consists of fascinating anecdotes detailing the adventures of Ibn Battouta and talks about the cultures of the places he visited, including Algeria, Russia, India and China.

Speaking about the book, Kalimat Founder and CEO Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi, said: "Ibn Battouta was an intrepid traveller, a well known diarist with a penchant for detail, and a jurist. As a trailblazer of his era, he serves as a role model for children who want to follow their dreams and opt for a career in an unconventional field. His story, the first in a series by Kalimat, is sure to spark a lifelong love for travel and books among young readers, and we are very proud to be showcasing it at the fair." Kalimat, which is participating for the third consecutive year under the umbrella of the Sharjah Department of Culture, is also showcasing Reem Ghazal’s young adult novel Maskoon, translated by Rania Sanyoura. This ground breaking book, with its surprise ending, is Kalimat’s first title in the horror genre and follows four young teenagers and their experiences with the world of spirits as they spend a night in a haunted palace.

Speaking of the goals for the event, Sheikha Bodour said: "Kalimat’s aim is to highlight our portfolio of Arabic books for children and young adults to our peers around the world, and to showcase our extraordinary selection of talented authors and illustrators." On the sidelines of the fair, Sheikha Bodour will hold a series of meetings to discuss selling and buying rights. Said she: "No book fair is more central to publishing than the Frankfurt Book Fair as it brings together publishers from all over the world to do business. As such, it provides a great platform for Kalimat to expand its spectrum and to reach more markets."
