(13 November 2011)

Under The Patronage Of His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member Of Supreme Council And Ruler Of Sharjah

Under the patronage of His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, UNESCO will take part in Sharjah International Book Fair 2011.

H.H Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, supported UNESCO after it had lost funding due to its decision to grant membership to Palestine. The patronage comes as an expression of appreciation to UNESCO’s role in developing the educational and cultural fields worldwide, and particularly to its stance regarding the rights of the Palestinian people and its appreciation of the Arabic culture.

Mr. Ahmad Bin Rakhad Al Amri, Director of SIBF, said: “We welcome UNESCO in Sharjah International Book Fair 2011. Its participation comes under the patronage of H.H Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, who is always keen on embracing the main sponsors of culture, education and heritage across the world. UNESCO has countless contributions to the educational and cultural enhancement of mankind, and of course to defending the oppressed, which was seen recently when it awarded membership to Palestine which led to UNESCO suffering loss of funding. Additionally, we realize the big role UNESCO plays in the dissemination of education and in building educated societies across the world.”

In 1998, Sharjah was crowned the ‘Cultural Capital of the Arab World’ by UNESCO, an honor truly deserved especially with the ongoing efforts of H.H Dr Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi in the culture and knowledge fields.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) was established in 1945. It aims at preserving and furthering peace and security by promoting international collaboration through education, science and culture, in order to consolidate the universal respect for justice, the rule of law and human rights according to the fundamental freedoms proclaimed in the UN Charter.

The Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF) runs from 16th November - 26th November 2011 at the Expo Centre, Sharjah.
