Rare Book Narrates Tale Of UAE Currency Development

Mutaz Mohammed Osman, researcher and writer narrates the story of the currency development in the UAE in his book “history of UAE” currency being displayed in the ongoing Sharjah book Fair at Expo center.

Mr. Osman who also stamps and coins collector has exclusivity in exploring the development of Coins since the Greece currency which was known as Darkham that made before 2500 years , followed by Islamic currency, Colonization currency, Indian, currency until the first UAE currency known as Dirham ( named after the Greece currency Darkham started to be used in May, 19.1973.

He also talked about very rare coins that used in the history of the UAE, such as coins used as compass to show directions and some coin resample hair pin used for predicting luck and highlighted the traditional way of making coins in the country.

Through the book which is also used as reference in Central bank, the Author narrated the heritage history and its development in each emirate.

He said people in the UAE used the Greece Darkham during the Era of Great Al expander had been used for long period, until the Islam entered the Land of Oman and brought with the Islamic coins made of gold and silver which later Arabicized when king khalifah Abdull Al Malik bin Marwan Umayyad replaced the Sasanian Symbols and words with Arabic ones.

Then Maria Theresa coins which was known as that with French coins, but original was Austrian coins which used be wore by women for decoration. Talked about the quwasim coins and Othman coins and then the Bargash paisa made by Duke of Zanzibar, Bargash bin Saeed bin Sultan in Oman and used in all gulf countries.
