The Bee’ah School of Environment – an initiative created by Bee’ah, the Middle East’s leading and award winning integrated environment and waste management company – along with the founding partners Sharjah Education Zone (SEZ) and Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services (SCHS), have shortlisted 20 exceptional environmentally sustainable projects from participating schools for the second ‘Sharjah Environment Awareness Award’, created under the direction of H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, member of the Supreme Council of the UAE and ruler of Sharjah.
The Sharjah Environment Awareness Award (SEAA) is an ongoing competition launched by Bee’ah in 2010 through the Bee’ah School of Environment. It is designed to help school teachers coach pupils on environmental responsibility using Bee’ah School of Environment programmes and activities. It aims to spread awareness on all aspects of the environment including preserving natural resources, reducing waste disposal, conserving water and creating a sustainable environment.
The 20 school projects have been shortlisted based on creativity, innovation and environmental sustainability of implementing the 3R’s – reduce, re-use, recycle – implemented within the schools’ activities. This year, additional criteria have been added, including adopting a green code within the school and demonstrating its commitment to positive environmental habits and values as well as forming and establishing an eco-club committee to involve students and teachers from the whole school.
Mr. Khaled Al Huraimel, Bee’ah Chief Executive Officer spoke about the initiative and said: “Bee’ah places strong emphasis on the Sharjah Environmental Awareness Award by awarding the schools, instead of individuals, for their sustainable projects. Every individual forms a major part of our society, each working together as one; so it is the collective efforts of each student and teacher involved to set their school as a leading example.”
The shortlisted projects received coaching and tutoring during a seminar conducted by the Bee’ah Environment Education Team, in collaboration with the Sharjah Education Zone and the Sharjah City for Humanitarian City, to facilitate the shortlisted schools to prepare their projects for the second phase and effectively involve the wider community such as institutions, schools’ neighborhood and parents to lead environmentally sustainable lifestyles, and ultimately help protect the planet Earth.
The second cycle of the awards was launched on 1st of November, 2011; and the winners will be announced at a closing ceremony in June 2012 and will receive prizes along with the prestigious award in recognition for their sustainable achievements.
